Senator Square: Proficiency testing this week at Carson High

Students are spending the weekend resting up and preparing for High School Proficiency Examinations (HSPE). Monday through Thursday will be late start days for students not taking proficiencies. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, sophomores are scheduled to take the science, math and reading proficiencies, while juniors take the writing proficiency on Wednesday. Remember, lots of rest and healthy meals are important for student success during testing. STUDENT COUNCIL REPORTIt is election time for Student Council! Student Body position filing ends on Tuesday, with elections being held on March 13 and 14. Positions for student body include: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, historian, public relations, and school board representative. Come out for our first baseball game that will take place at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Elko High School. Come out and show that Senator Pride. The following students placed and will now be participating at the state level competition on March 30. Exhibit Category: First place — “Radio: The Gateway to Modern Democracy,” by Margaret Duvall and Rebecca Matley. Second place — “Japan’s Decision to Attack the Naval Base at Pearl Harbor,” by Kayla Kennison.Also qualifying: “Marie Curie: Her Effect on Medical Science,” by Sonia Arevalo and Sarai Garcia; “Acceptance of Israel as a Country Ensured Conflict,” by Jacob Bertocchi, Luke Szatmary and Aaron Woodbury.Documentary Category: First place tie — “Sputnik: The Dawn of a New Era,” by Jessica Cacho, Jake Jones, and Erica Gallegos; and “China’s One-Child Policy and its’ Effect on Asia’s Life and Land” by Samantha Lowe and Bailey Griffin.Website Category: First place — “Buddhism: One Man’s Impact on India,” by Jessica Basa, Sarah Cristl, and Emily Schmid. Second place — “Math & Science in the Age of Reason: Isaac Newton’s Discoveries in Math & Science” by Carson Barnett.HOSA STUDENT PUTSSKILLS TO USETristin Parrish, a junior at CHS and a member of HOSA, participated in training & certification in First Aid, CPR and AED in December with more than 100 other students as part of the Health Sciences Pathway at Carson High School. In February, she put that training to use as a fellow student had a seizure during lunch at school. Tristin took control of the situation by calmly clearing the area, getting both a teacher’s and dean’s attention, and calling 911. Tristin also placed her sweatshirt under the student’s head, to protect them from hitting the solid ground. She acted quickly, calmly and appropriately as a first responder and helped the EMTs when they arrived. Way to go Tristin!FBLA STUDENTS HELP IRSMembers of the CHS Future Business Leaders of America are participating with a program called VITA - Volunteer Income Tax Assistance which is an IRS organization. VITA prepares federal and state income tax forms for low income individuals and families. The VITA volunteers interview the taxpayers, put the information into the IRS tax program and e-file the taxes for the taxpayers at no cost. The following FBLA students have been volunteering: Porfirio Jauregui, Diana Gurrola, Bryan Dones, Victor Quispe, Matt Salvador, Elisa Ruhberg. Each of these students received seven hours of training from the IRS; passed a certification exam from the IRS and are now putting in about two hours per week during the tax season at the BRIC at 108 E. Proctor St.BOWLING RESULTSOn Wednesday night, the CHS Bowling Team defeated Spanish Springs 26-19 in the High Desert Interscholastic Bowling Program. Steven Costa, Kyle Lethcoe and Brianna Mathiesen were named to the all- league team. Steven Costa was named as the “male player of the year.” Congratulations to all bowlers who helped the team achieve the win!ALL-STATE BANDCongratulations to the students who made all-state band this year! Students spend more than three months preparing for their shot every year. Competition is fierce, and Carson has a solid representation again with seven students. Students have to first audition into their zone honor band. Only the students who made it are eligible to audition for all-state. Even then, the spots are slim. Of the 61 clarinet auditions, 15 are accepted into the ensemble. Of the 52 saxophone auditions (23 alto, 16 tenor, 13 baritone), eight (four alto, two tenor, and two baritone) are accepted. Simply to make it is a profound accomplishment. To be awarded principal (top audition in the state) is incredible and worthy of great praise. Here are the students who made the cut: • Cece Dietlein, senior - Principal Bass Clarinet, band (one of four accepted).• Jessica Dodge, senior - Principal Alto Sax, band (one of four accepted).• Cassidy Robinson, sophomore - second chair Trumpet, orchestra (one of two accepted).• Kenny Koop, senior - eighth chair Trumpet, band (one of 11 accepted).• Greta Sturm, junior - fourth chair Horn, band (one of six accepted). Greta also made it on flute but chose horn.• Richard Long, senior - third chair Euphonium, band (one of four accepted).• Jonathan Kondor, sophomore - third chair percussion, band (one of 10 accepted).Once again, Carson High School has the highest representation of wind and percussion players of all the schools in the North (every county other than Clark).We are so proud of our band students and their instructor Jarod Sorum. Way to represent CHS! Daniel has a weighted GPA of 4.4 and is currently enrolled in several AP and Honors classes. For the last four years Daniel has been an integral part of our school’s community as a member of National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and the CHS varsity soccer team. Daniel competed in the state FBLA competition last year where his business plan placed fourth. This year he will be competing at the state competition in Business Ethics and Business Presentation. Daniel is employed with the Carson City Recreation Department, often working as a basketball referee. He also volunteers in the community through his church. Daniel is interested in pursuing a degree in international business with a marketing minor. He has been accepted to several colleges and is trying to decide between the University of Denver, Seattle Pacific University and Western Washington University. CHS is proud of the contribution Daniel has made to the class of 2013.• Angila Golik is a government and sociology teacher at CHS and a member of Senator Pride.
