One week after a solid opening performance at Silver Stage, the Fallon girls and boys track teams ahead across the Lahontan Valley to Fernley.
The Greenwave hit the track at 9 a.m. and aim to steadily improve early in the season.
Senior Tyson Ernst picked up where he left off last season with wins in the 100-meter dash and triple jump and a second-place finish in the long jump.
In addition to Ernst, Fallon’s jumpers were in form as the boys and girls won three events, had three second-place finishes and took third in two others.
One area both programs are focused on is the distance races. Tanner Boone for the boys and Katie O’Brien had strong showings and look to continue their senior-season success on Saturday.
Coach Steve Heck said the coaches are still trying to figure which events all the athletes will compete. The Fernley meet, Heck added, gives the coaching staff one more meet to find a place for every athlete.
“We are still getting in shape and trying to find out where the kids are at and where to put them,” he said.
Heck said he would like to have each athlete set in their events by next week when the Wave host the annual Elks Invitational on March 23.
Despite the juggling act, Heck said the first several weeks of practice have focused on technique and heaped praise on his young group of throwers, hurdlers and distance runners.
“I’ve been pleasantly surprised,” he said. “We have some young distance runners who look good.”
The swim teams, meanwhile, are coming off Thursday’s performance against Bishop Manogue. Results of that meet were not available at press time.
The Wave, however, look toward Saturday’s Aqua 5 meet at 9 a.m. in Minden. The Aqua 5 features the five clubs from the Zephyr League and allow for the athletes their second or third opportunity to hit regional qualifying marks.
Sam Martin and Keith and Kyle Grimes each had two wins for the Wave during last week’s dual meet against Reed.
In addition, both clubs had solid performances in the relays as to numerous more individual performances.
