Blockbuster closing within three weeks; Home Treasures gone by May

Blockbuster on East William Street in Carson City will close within three weeks, the Carson Mall’s Home Treasures in about six weeks.

Floyd Miller, manager of Blockbuster at 1442 E. William St., said during the going-out-of-business sale the local outlet of the nationwide movie sale and rental chain has sold 15,000 movies and has about 10,000 more in stock.

The closure is part of a pullback nationwide, he said, with 350 shuttering. That amounts to roughly 40 percent closing down, he said. He said two of Reno’s four Blockbusters outlets also are closing in Northern Nevada.

The capital city store is slated to close 20 days from Monday, Miller said. When asked if he would stay with Blockbuster, he said that wouldn’t happen and he was seeking employment in law enforcement. He said he had finished his work at the Western Nevada State Peace Officers Academy and was searching for an opening in his chosen field.

Home Treasures, which is scheduled to close at the end of April, announced in a flier it is moving on but the closure may not be permanent.

Susie Messina, who said she is co-owner of the gift shop with Dawn Henderson, confirmed the shop would close at the mall and a decision would come later on the next course of action.

Home Treasures was in the large northern Douglas County shopping center at Topsy Lane for five years, at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden for a year and has been at the Carson Mall since about 2009, Messina said.

“We’re going to take a break,” she said. “It’s not because of the mall.”

The mall has been without a major tenant since Gottschalks closed.

Messina said the “economy has changed” and many people shop at big box stores or online.

“People love us,” she said, “but they still want the deal.”
