St. Patrick’s Day Art Bar salutes the Irish; film series begins next with with Sci-Fi

The Arts Council will present the St. Patrick’s Day edition of its popular Art Bar and Open House tonight at the Art Center from 5-9 p.m. It’s a great opportunity to get together with family and friends and also will be the last chance to see the current exhibitions.

The Lahontan Valley Invitational, which collects recent works by Churchill County artists is on view in the Classroom Gallery and “Evan Dent: Boomtown / Rossitza Todorova: City Introspections,” show of mixed-media drawings by the artists originally from Reno in on view in the Classroom Gallery. Tonight’s event is underwritten by Mark and Linda Hammond, so please be sure to thank them for making it impossible.

CAC’s spring film series will begin next Friday night. Last fall’s series was entitled “Strange Days: Endtimes” and presented films about the ending of things, from a variety of perspectives, because of the looming threat of the Mayan Apocalypse.

Well, obviously, we survived the Apocalypse. One of the many interpretation of the Mayan prophecy was that it did not mean the literal end of time but rather that we would enter into a new phase of interplanetary existence that would be dominated by the rise of the feminine in both the earthly and intergalactic realms.

So the upcoming series, “Strange Women: Sci-Fi Classics,” will present four classic films from the late 1950s through the early 1960s which feature female protagonists in a variety of kooky science fiction situations.

Because Saturday afternoon double features of B Movies—low-budget, short, genre-bending, often unintentionally humorous—were a staple of the time period, the first two films in the series, “Queen of Outer Space” and “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman,” both from 1958, will be shown as a double feature on March 22.

The series will continue with “One Million Years B.C.” featuring Raquel Welch on March 29 and will conclude with Jane Fonda in “Barbarella” on April 5.

Tickets will be available at the Art Center on the nights of the screenings. Admission is $7 for CAC members and $10 for nonmembers. Special tickets for all three nights of films will be available only on March 22—$18 for members, $27 for nonmembers. For information, call 775-423-1440.
