Tigers sweep Wooster, improve to 6-0 in league

RENO — The Douglas High baseball team took down Wooster 6-4 Saturday to complete a season sweep of the Colts.

The win marked Douglas’ seventh in a row and boosted the Tigers’ season record to 10-1 overall and 6-0 in Northern Division I play. Douglas has recorded two-game sweeps of McQueen, Hug and now Wooster to start the year.

“Wooster, it’s just a hard place to pick up a win,” Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. “The kids battled today and Wooster battled us right back.

“They tied us up at 4 in the fifth inning there and it was a credit to out kids that they got back out in front and were able to put a tough team away.”

Junior ace Kyle Johnson was solid for the Tigers on the mound, striking out eight and walking two while improving to 3-0 on the year. He scattered four hits and gave up just two earned runs.

“Kyle was cruising,” Jacobsen said. “He found a good groove today and just kept at it. Our infield made some errors that helped set up those runs Wooster did score, but Kyle was really sharp out there.”

Cale Kynett pounded out three hits and drove in a run, Dusty Fisher had two hits and three stolen bases and Cody Carter drove in a pair of runs to lead the Tiger offense.

Nolan Weintz and Kaleb Foster both doubled and Teddy Mason and Weintz each drove in a run.

DAYTON LOSES THREE

ELKO — Dayton went 0-3 in its crossover weekend.

The Dust Devils lost 8-7 to Lowry on Friday, and then lost 10-9 in eight innings to Spring Creek in eight innings and 11-1 to Elko. No other information was provided by the Dayton coaches.

SWIMMING

CARSON SPLITS

MINDEN — Carson High’s swim teams split with McQueen at the Carson Valley Aquatic Center. The girls won 150-132, while the boys lost 153-121.

Abbi Pittman and Sophie Holmes led the Senators with two wins each. Pittman won the 100 fly in 1:08.88 and the 500 free in 5:41.83. Holmes won the 200 IM in 2:31.82 and the 100 free 59.69.

Ashley Meyer won the 200 free in 2:15.13 and was second in the 100 fly in 1:12.76. Charlee Bradley won the 100 back in 1:13.37 and took third in the 200 free in 2:30.82. Nora Streng was second in the 100 back in 1:13.57, while Delaney Fine was second in the 100 breast in 1:34.27. Taylor Tuttle was third in the 500 free at 6:42.56 and Amy Harrison was third in the 100 breast with a 1:38.13,

Carson won the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay with Bradlee, Holmes, Pittman and Meyer on the medley quartet, while it was Meyer, Streng, Pittman and Holmes in the free relay. Tuttle, Fine, Liana Torres and Bradley placed second in the 400 free relay.

On the boys side, Dagen Kipling won the 200 IM in 2:10.14 and the 100 breast in 1:07.78. Tallon Rauch won the 500 free in 5:15.81 and was second in the 100 back in 1:00.53. Gary Showalter was first in the 100 fly in 1:04.87 and third in the 200 IM in 2:22.77. Andrew Updegrove was second in the 200 free in 2:34.14 and fourth in the 100 breast in 1:26.94. Andrew Cowan was second in the 50 free in 29.31. Carson won the 200 free relay thanks to the efforts of Showalter, Rauch, Kipling and Gaige Bobbit. They clocked a 1:44.59.

SOFTBALL

DOUGLAS SWEEPS

MINDEN — The Douglas High softball team picked up a key Sierra League sweep in Minden Saturday afternoon against a Manogue squad with a roster largely unchanged from a regular-season runner-up finish last year.

Douglas won the first game 9-7 in what was a defensive struggle early on that later developed into a dramatic display of offense.

The Tigers built an early lead in Game 2 only to have to fend off a late Miner charge to hold on for an 8-4 win.

Douglas held the edge through much of Game 1, building a 4-1 lead through five innings, but Manogue broke out with a big four-run top of the sixth to go up 5-4.

Three of Manogue’s four runs in the frame came with two outs, but the Tigers were able to settle down to close out the inning.

The Miners appeared to have full control of the momentum, though, and quickly recorded two outs to begin the bottom of the sixth. However, a fielder’s choice left Makayla Shaver aboard, which ended up being exactly the key Douglas would need.

Taylor McKinnon laced a two-out single up the middle and Maddy Parks came up with a big single on the first pitch she saw to bring Shaver around for the tying run and set Douglas back up at the top of the order.

In the next at bat, Katie Kluever belted a triple off the center field fence, bringing the go-ahead and an insurance run across.

Freshman Allison Meyer provided the exclamation point on the win, smashing a two-run home run deep over the fence in right center.

Manogue ended up bringing an additional two runs across in the top of the seventh, but Douglas was able to seal the win with a pair of groundball outs.

Kluever singled, doubled and tripled, driving in two, Meyer drove in three and Illiana Brown hit a home run and drove in two runs.

Kelly Sonnemann doubled and drove in a run, and Leonna Mortimer, Bowman, McKinnon and Parks each singled.

In Game 2, Douglas went up 6-0 through the first three innings before a three-run home run to cut the deficit in half.

Douglas got two runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 8-3, but Manogue scratched another run across before the Tigers were able to close out the game.

Kali Sargent struck out six and walked none on her way to the win in the circle.

Kluever went 2-for-3 and Meyer went 3-for-4 as each drove in a pair of runs.

WIN MEET

RENO —The Carson High girls team outlasted Galena and Reed to win the Damonte Ranch Invitational on Saturday. Carson finished with 141, while Galena and Reed had 134 and 131, respectively. Carson was third in boys behind Reed and Damonte Ranch.

Elena Thurman (TJ, 34-7), Cindy Juchtzer (3200, 12:54.3), Athena Favero (300 H, 49.2), Courtney Hack (SP, 31-3 3/4), Teresa Boehmer (Discus, 99-2) and Madison Preston and Kayla Aikins (HJ, 4-10).

Alex Drozdoff was second in the 1600 (5:41.3), while Boehmer was second in the shot (29-10). Aikins was third in the 800 in 2:34.7, shaving 10 seconds off her previous best. Favero was fourth in the 100 hurdles, Preston was third in the triple jump (33-9) and Thurman fifth in the 100 (13.1). Preston, Favero, Drozdoff and Aikins were second in the 1600 relay (4:24.5).

Dakota Baker won both hurdle events (16.0 and 43.4) and placed third in the high jump (5-8). Corey Reid won the 800 in 1:58.9 and placed second in the pole vault at 11 feet. Nathan Hazard won the discus with a 143-10.

Asa Carter was second in the triple jump at 40-7, while Taylor Bradshaw was third in the 800 (2:01.5). Zach Heinz was fourth in the 800 at 2:02.2.

The quartet of Bradshaw, Baker, Joey Thurman and Anthony Estrada won the 400 relay at 45.6, while the 800 relay was third in 1:35.7. The quartet of Michael Samii, Heinz, Dexter Cummings and Estrada won the 1600 in 3:32.6.

DAYTON TAKES 4th

FALLON — Dayton’s boys and girls varsity track squads placed fourth at the 41st annual Fallon Elks Invitational on Saturday.

Lettie Lynch won the 100 in 13.46 and placed second in the 200 at 27.37. Lynch teamed with Devon Cates, Ashley Vickers and Sierra Ingham to finish second in the 800 relay (1:55.64) and third in the 400 rely (54.21). Kaylee Turner won the shot put with a throw of 33-11 1/2 and took third in the discus with a 105-8 effort. Madison Foley was second in the high jump at 4-10, while Vickers was third in the long jump (15 feet) and fifth in the triple jump (31-1 1/2).

On the boys side, Aaron Elissa was second in the 1600 (4:42.40) and seventh in the 3200 (10:49.10). Joshua Koch won the shot put (49-7 3/4) and was second in the discus (135-11). Austin Fletcher was third in the high jump (5-10) and Benji Ply was sixth in the pole vault (10-0). Andrew Goodman was fourth i n the 400 at 53.73. The 1600 relay team of Skyler Berntson, Goodman, Dallon Mendoza and Julio Meza were third in the 1600 relay (3:44.92). Fletcher teamed with Berntson, Mendoza and Goodman for a 1:38.89 in the 800 relay.
