Community sports Carson’s Williams selected for USSA U16 National Championships.

Carson City’s Natalie Williams continued the momentum of a successful season and seized a third-place podium finish in slalom at The Western Region U16 Championship at Alyeska Ski Resort in Alaska where more than 200 selected racers from western states competed for top honors.

Williams, who skis for the Heavenly Ski Foundation, earned the right to be one of 10 girls to represent the Western Region at the upcoming U16 National Championship & Assessment Project at the U.S. Ski Association Center of Excellence in Park City, Utah.

The National Championships consists of 30 U16 boys and 30 U16 girls from across the United States, who are brought together in Park City to assess the current athletic condition of American Ski Racing in this age group with ski racing competitions, technical skiing skills, and physical conditioning. They will meet with the national team and development staff of USSA and USST and be presented with information on athletic and sport science components of the American Alpine Training System.

Williams will return home from Park City to compete in the Far West Division Championships to be held at Diamond Peak Ski Resort (giant slalom) and Heavenly Ski Resort (slalom) April 6-9.

CHEER TRYOUTS AT CHS

Carson High School will conduct cheer tryouts for the 2013-2014 school year from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 9-12 in Senator Square.

Sport packets are available online at www.carsonhigh.com under the athletics tab. A current physical must be provided with the packet for all incoming freshmen.

Packets are due to the athletic office at Carson High School, located in the main entrance by the flag pole no later than at 3 p.m. April 8. The office will be closed for spring break.

There will be a mandatory parent meeting at 6:30 p.m. April 8 in the school library.

MENEZES WINS AT CVGC

Marc Menezes shot a net 68 to win Flight A at the recent Carson Valley Golf Club Men’s Club event.

Charles Poe was second with a 72 and Augie Martinez was third with a 73. Chuck Householder won Flight B with a 65, while Matt Lindsey was second with a 67. David Thorne was third at 72. Jack Zippwald won Flight C with a 66, one shot better than Paul Lockwood. Jim Arena and Virgil Anderson tied for third at 70.

SEARS WIN AT TCCC

Steve and Sean Sear combined for a 57 to win the St. Patrick’s Day Fourball Shamble at Thunder Canyon Country Club on March 17.

Dave and Shirley Westfall and Dave and Brooke Nielsen tied for second at 62. There was a four-way tie for third with Larry and Elaine Easterling, Ann Marie Sear and Ryan Sear, Keith Sulprizio and Mike Schellin, and Kyle Schellin and Tim Foster. The teams finished at 64.

LOCAL GYMNASTS SOAR IN RENO

The Silver State Gymnastics Academy’s girls competitive team competed at the 2013 Nevada State Championships in Reno. It was the final and largest meet of the season.

Gracie Walt won first place on vault in the Level 3 child D division. At Level 4 in the senior B division, Alycia Hellwinkel won the gold medal on the bars and beam, and second on floor to win second place all-around (AA). Madison Adams won the vault in the Senior C division. Emily Lewis is the junior C AA champion by winning gold on beam, and silver on beam and floor. In the same division, Elianna King won bronze on vault, and Elle Liebendorfer took gold on bars and silver on the beam. Rosalia Daulerio tied for first with her teammate Emma Habaradas on vault. Daulerio then went on to place second on beam and floor to place second in the AA.

In the Level 5 senior B division, Brianna Wiles won the bronze medal on the vault. At Level 6, in the junior B division, Lily Reid finished her season with another great meet. She won bars and was second on floor en route to a second-place finish. Silver State Gymnastics Academy won the second place Level 4 team award.

FLY FISHING CLUB MEETS ON MONDAYS

The Carson Fly Fishing Club is a service club for all those interested in fly-fishing, fly tying, and trout habitat conservation and preservation. The club meets the first Monday of each month, at 7 p.m. in the Ormsby Room of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. New members are always welcome.

The monthly meetings have presentations on fly tying, fishing gear and techniques specific to local waters, various fishing experiences, and the activities of other organizations such as the Nevada Division of Wildlife, or the Nature Conservancy, which impact the waters that people fish.

The club also hosts annual classroom instruction series in the spring for novice and intermediate fly-tiers, and introductory fly-fishing.

Also discussed are upcoming club projects.
