Get pedaling: May is bike month

Today is the first day of Bike Month. Bicycling continues to grow in popularity as more people discover the fun of riding, as well as the cost savings associated with reduced fuel consumption and the health benefits of physical activity.

The Carson City non-profit group Muscle Powered is spearheading the bike month events, and has a full slate of events planned to promote cycling throughout May. Along with generous partners from around the community, bicycle advocates have been working hard to put together a full calendar of activities to share their love of biking with everyone in Carson City.

Bicycling is a great way to see your community from a different perspective, and is a great sport for people of all ability levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert; a commuter or a recreational cyclist; whether you wear spandex or a business suit; whether you ride across the street or across the country; you’re part of the bike community, and this month is all about you.

Are you bike-curious? Do you want to learn if you have what it takes to join the pedalers? (Hint: You do.) There are events for you, too. Come check out one of the commuter stations at the Bryan Building today through Friday to learn the best routes for you to ride to work. Drop in at one of the bike clinics that are taking place at area bike shops to learn how to change a tire or the basics of bike maintenance. Join in on one of the group rides — there’s something for all levels — and meet other people who love to ride for all different reasons.

Rides, clinics and cultural events are slated for this month, all with a focus on two-wheeled transportation, and you’re invited to take part. Bikes are a legitimate form of transportation, and we all need to share the road.

Carson City Health and Human Services understands the importance of bicycling and is actively engaging community partners to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety and access in Carson City. Won’t you join us? We’re on a roll.
