Time is ticking, and the end of the school year is approaching. Seniors are preparing for project presentations, advanced-placement testing and the entire school is gearing up to end the year with finals. There are only four Mondays left of the school year.
We have had a monumental year at CHS. Students, clubs, and administration at CHS will take time out to thank teachers as it is National Teacher Appreciation Week.
I want to personally thank my co-workers for their endless efforts of making CHS the best school in Northern Nevada.

Several CHS students performed very well at the district tournament and placed high in their events.
Jazmyn Conde and Emily Spence took sixth overall in duo interpretation for their piece “Oh the places you’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss. In Lincoln-Douglas, Walker survived through five rounds, making his last tournament a successful one.
In Congress, Porfirio Jauregi and Luke Szatmary both were ranked in the top eight in their chambers. Porfirio and Luke also had qualified to compete in the district level Rotary speaking competition held at MontBleu on Friday. They placed third and first respectively. Luke has now qualified to advance to the area competition May 18 at John Ascuaga’s Nugget.
PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
CHS Photography department is holding a photography contest called, Show the Best of CHS; the Old, the New, and You! Show the Community What We Are All About.
A community group helped come up with the idea. It’s a great way to see things here from the student perspective and share it with the community. All CHS students can enter. Community members are judging.
For contest rules, please email photo teacher Brian Reedy at breedy@carson.k12.nv.us or visit his classroom #1652. Cash prizes will be awarded. Good luck!
‘EARTHLY’ FASHION SHOW
A fashion show was held this past week at CHS. Senior student Ashlee Donovan chose to design, create and then showcase fashion items made from recycled items to complete her senior project.
The theme of her fashion show was, “The Earth.” Materials used by Ashlee were to enhance that message, such as rayon fabric; which is a recycled fabric. Five pieces were designed.
One dress was a bottle cap dress, which was made with blue and green bottle caps collected from plastic water bottles. Another dress, representing the trees, was made entirely out of recycled newspapers. The third piece represented the arctic and was made with bubble wrap. The fourth dress represented the ocean and looked like corral and was made entirely out of rayon fabric
The fashion show took place during the lunch hour in Senator Square and was a hit! Congratulations Ashlee on such a unique senior project. Ashlee plans to attend a fashion institute this fall.
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
What do you get when you add athleticism, brains and charisma? You get this week’s Senior Spotlight senior Richard Long. Taking after his father, Richard has developed a passion for rock climbing that has taken him to new heights as the president of the Carson High School Rock Climbing Club. But Richard is not just known for this, or his multiple interests in snowboarding, hiking, waterskiing and biking. He is also known as the Carson High Marching Band Drum Major, a three-year member of the All State Band with the Euphonium, this year’s Mr. Carson High and Homecoming king.
With a 4.56 grade-point average gleaned primarily from advanced-placement courses, Richard is a member of Link Crew and a three-year National Honor Society member. Next year Richard plans on attending UNR majoring in mechanical engineering then transfer to Cal Poly for a masters in aeronautical engineering. He then plans to pursue a career designing new technology in the aviation industry.
We are proud of Richard’s contributions to the Carson High community, and we wish him the best success in the future.
Angila Golik is a government teacher at Carson High School and a member of Senator Pride.
