The Fallon swim teams stood strong at the Zephyr League Championships on Saturday in Reno.
The boys placed fifth with 200 points, while the Lady Wave took sixth with 246. Truckee won both meets as their boys collected 390 points and the girls tallied 366.
Fallon, though, returns to the pool on Friday and Saturday for the Northern Division I-A regional meet at the Carson Pool in Carson City. Friday’s preliminary heats begin at 2 p.m. and Saturday’s competition starts at 11 a.m.
Joining Fallon in the newly formed Northern DI-A swim league are Fernley, Lowry, Truckee, Incline, South Tahoe, Sparks and Sage Ridge. The top four individuals and relay teams qualify for next week’s state meet in Carson City.
Keith Grimes, one of the favorites to capture a state title in the 50-yard freestyle, won the heat with a time of 24.25 seconds. David Sandvig placed ninth (28.78). Grimes also took second in the 100 free (53.69), less than two-tenths of a second behing Bishop Manogue’s Kyle Curtis (53.53).
The boys 200 medley relay team of Kyle Grimes, Nathan Narag, Garrett Snooks and Davis Koenig finished third with a time of 2:26.43. The 200 free relay team of Kyle and Keith Grimes, Sandvig and Snooks placed third (1:46.09).
Sam Martin aided the Lady Wave’s cause with a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:06.53). Martin also took third in the 100 backstroke (1:06.32).
Kyle Grimes, meanwhile, placed second 100 back (1:06.07) and fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:34.16)
Alex Lynch placed sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:16.37) and Katrina Ward was eighth (2:24.75). Lynch also nabbed fifth in the 500 free (6:08.47).
Lyndsey Thurston sprinted to sixth place in the 50 free (29.0), while Sierra Bivens took ninth (30.37). Thurston took seventh in the 100 free with a mark of 1:05.00, while Tina Anderson placed 11th (1:10.81). Anderson followed with a fifth-place performance in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.19).
The Lady Wave’s 200 free relay squad of Thurston, Anderson, Lynch and Martin placed fourth (1:57.87).
