Wolf Pack swept by Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. — Trailing 5-1, the University of Nevada baseball team scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to close to within a run, but was unable to complete the comeback falling 6-4 at Fresno State in the final regular season game on Saturday at Pete Beiden Field.

The Wolf Pack lost all three games of the Mountain West series to the Bulldogs.

Nevada returns to Fresno to play the Bulldogs for the fourth consecutive game in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament on at 7 p.m. tonight.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs scored the first three runs of the game before Nevada tallied a run in the top of the fifth. Fresno State answered in their half of the inning putting a run on the board.

Brooks Klein singled home two runs in the top of the seventh and pinch hitter Tommy Niebergall’s sacrifice fly made it a 5-4. The Bulldogs answered back with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 6-4.

Tom Jameson (1-8) suffered the loss allowing three runs in four innings on the mound. Jake Shull (3-1) pitched four scoreless innings to earn the win and Tim Borst pitched the final two innings to earn his fourth save.

Klein led the Pack with two hits and two RBI, while Kevin Viers had three hits including a pair of solo home runs and drove in three for Fresno State.

On Friday, the Bulldogs nabbed a 10-4 victory.

Fresno State got a two-run homer from centerfielder Aaron Judge in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed in the game. Nevada got an RBI single from third baseman Hugo Hernandez in the top of the third to close within a run at 2-1.

The Bulldogs, though, scored six times in the bottom of the third and were aided by two Pack errors that led to four unearned runs in the inning. Judge hit his second home run of the game in the fourth and to give Fresno State a 9-1 lead.

Hernandez drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The Pack scored twice in the sixth inning to make the final scored 10-4.

On Thursday, Nevada lost 2-1 in 10 innings.

An error by Pack second baseman Shaun Mize in the bottom of the eighth led to Fresno State tying the game at 1. In the bottom of the 10th inning, Fresno State reserve catcher Taylor Ward hit his third home run of the season gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory.
