Deadline to apply for Carson City School Board vacancy extended

With no applicants yet for the open Carson City School Board seat, officials are extending the application deadline to June 5.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to contribute their life skills and interests to a very worthwhile cause,” said Richard Stokes, superintendent of the Carson City School District. “It’s a great school district with great students and staff.”

Candidates previously had until May 28 to submit a letter of application.

The District 6 seat was left vacant when former trustee Barbara Myers resigned at the end of April, after serving more than half her term. Myers ousted Randy Carlson for the District 6 seat in 2010, but left her post early to care for her ailing daughter.

Stokes said he hopes to present a list of applicants at the June 11 school board meeting, where trustees will select from among them.

The successful candidate will serve out the remainder of Myers’ term, then be eligible to run in the open election in 2014.

School board trustees earn $400 a month and typically attend two monthly meetings, at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays.

Stokes said applicants should “have an interest in eduction, in youth, and in improving the local economy through education.”

Generally, District 6 encompasses an area within the southwest portion of Carson City. Boundaries include the areas south of Kings Canyon Road, southwest U.S. Highway 395 to Colorado Street, southeast along Silver Sage and Sean drives, southwest along Baker Drive to Koontz Lane, southwest along Bigelow to Clearview, southwest along Edmonds Drive to Snyder Avenue, and to the Douglas County line.
