Carson City and Virginia City are two of more than 100 U.S. cities that have been nominated to have downtown completely repainted by Benjamin Moore Paints.

Benjamin Moore launched its “Main Street Matters” initiative Wednesday, in which consumers around the country can vote online for which 20 main streets should be revitalized. No other Nevada cities were nominated.

The timing of the initiative is good, said Carson City Planning Director Lee Plemel.

“The downtown businesses are more organized than ever and looking for ways to make the downtown more attractive,” he said. “This could be a great opportunity to draw attention to what Carson City and our downtown have to offer.”

The Downtown Business Association recently approached the city about adding amenities, such as benches downtown, and the Downtown 20/20 group recently formed. It’s aimed at attracting more visitors downtown.

If Carson City or Virginia City is selected, Benjamin Moore will provide the paint and supplies needed for façades, porches, railings, shutters and other building-exterior trims, and will hire painters to complete the work.
