May Veteran of the Month announced

Michael Evans was recently recognized as Nevada’s May Veteran of the Month during a presentation at Las Vegas High School.

Since retiring from the U.S. Army, Evans has served as the senior army instructor at LVHS overseeing the instruction of almost 6,000 cadets who passed through the JROTC program during his 20-year tenure.

“Maj. Evans served and defended our country for over 50 years. He could have chosen another, easier life,” said Deputy Executive Director Kat Miller. “Instead, he continued to serve his nation by mentoring and guiding thousands of students, helping them to cross the threshold from childhood to living lives as honorable young men and women.”

Through his 20 years as a JROTC instructor, Evans encouraged young people toward their future success. His cadets have gone on to finish college, vocational schools and serve in the United States military. He has assisted his cadets with the organization and performance of numerous JROTC competitions, community service programs, color guards and leadership camps which helped his unit receive two congressional recognition certificates.

“The one thing that always strikes me, no matter where I go, is how involved veterans are in taking care of others,” said Miller. “There is no better example than Retired Maj. Michael Evans and on behalf of Gov. Brian Sandoval we are proud to recognize his contributions and proud is part of the Nevada veteran community.”

The Veteran of the Month program is managed by the Nevada Office of Veterans Services.

“Board members of the Veterans Services Commission review nominations and choose a recipient during quarterly meetings for the following three month period,” said Executive Director Cage. “Our office is very proud to staff this project on behalf of Governor Sandoval.” The public is invited to submit nominees for consideration by the Veterans Services Commission. Guidelines and a nomination application can be downloaded from the NOVS website at www.veterans.nv.gov and sent to the NOVS office in Reno. Candidates for the next quarter will be reviewed for their volunteer service and recipients will be chosen at the next Veterans Services Commission meeting in June 2013.
