Food for Thought will feed needy Carson City children weekdays starting June 10.

Children ages 2-18 who are in need will be served lunch 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Terrace Park in Carson City through Aug. 16. Terrace Park is just north of Empire Elementary School.

Food for Thought, a nonprofit group, purchases and prepares food for the lunch program, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture reimburses it for some of the costs. Carson Nugget operators agreed to let the group use kitchen facilities there.

Food for Thought leaders plan to partner with the Carson High School Culinary Arts program, employing two culinary students to develop lunch menus and assemble the lunches. It began serving lunches in Carson City last summer.

Last year the program fed about 67 children a day, with a peak of 115 in one day, according to a news release.

Food for Thought Executive Director Stephanie Gardner estimates that more children will participate in the program this year.

“This is our second year, and we believe the word is getting out,” she said in the release.
