Every week it seems that Carson unveils a trick play, and Friday was no exception.

On fourth-and-17 on the Senators’ first possession of the game, Carson coach Blair Roman called for a fake punt. Joey Thurman rolled left and lofted a pass to a wide-open Dilyn Rooker for 40 yards and a first down at the Damonte Ranch 5. Unfortunately, the play went for naught when Nevin Elliott fumbled at the Damonte 1.

“We’ve been working on that play for a while,” Roman said after Carson’s 27-10 win over the Mustangs. “We were just waiting for the right time to run it. The only bad thing is that we didn’t score.”

It’s the second pass that Thurman has thrown all year, and he’s completed both of them for 84 yards.

“I couldn’t really set up (properly) because of the heavy rush,” Thurman said. “I thought I had enough arm strength to get the ball there, and Rooker made a great catch.”

“It depends on the rush,” Rooker said. “They have to respect Joey’s speed. If the defender comes at him, I just go downfield.”

SCHAFER IS HOT

Carson quarterback Garrett Schafer is on a bit of a roll these days.

In his last three games, all wins, Schafer has completed 28 of 50 passes for 408 yards and four scores. He was 9 of 19 for 163 yards against Damonte.

“I thought Garrett played a fabulous game,” Roman said. “He threw the ball well tonight.”

BAKER OUT FOR YEAR

Dakota Baker, the Senators’ senior defensive end, missed the game because of a cracked Adam’s apple suffered when he took a hit last week against Spanish Springs. He was on the sidelines Friday, swollen throat and all. He is expected to undergo surgery this week.

Sophomore Ian Schulz, who started the season on the varsity and then went down to the JV squad to get more playing time, made the start in Baker’s place.

“It looked like he did a good job,” Roman said. “I’ll have to look at film.”

“I thought I did a good job,” Schulz said. “I need to be a little more aggressive.”

ETC...

For the third straight game, Carson missed an extra point, making it five in three games... Carson had one sack, that coming a couple of plays before an interception by Stefan Sobkiewicz ... The fumble recovery by Brady Rivera was his first of the season ... The interception by Sobkiewicz was his first, and Asa Carter now has two interceptions.
