DAYTON — As expected, outside hitter Madi Foley and running back Austin Fletcher walked away with big awards at the recent Division 1A all-league meetings.
Foley, who led the Dayton volleyball team to a 36-2 record and a second-place finish at the state tournament, won Division I Player of the Year honors for the second straight season. She was also named first team all-state.
Foley finished with 250 kills, 177 digs, 18 blocks and 24 aces. She led the team in both kills and digs.
Fletcher, meanwhile, was named first team at both running back and linebacker by the 1A coaches.
Fletcher had a tremendous season, breaking the school rushing record with 1,627 yards. He also added 233 yards receiving. All told, he had 16 rushing touchdowns and two receiving scores. On defense, he led the team with 114 tackles.
Coach Monica Halverson had two other first-team selections besides Foley. Setter Peach Coons and libero Taryn Schriner also were honored. Ashley Vickers was a second-team selection.
Coons had 291 assists, 68 digs and 36 aces, and she also was named all-state. Schriner finished with 128 digs, 39 kills and 24 aces. She was a second-team all-state pick.
Nose tackle Jesus Castaneda was a second-team all-league pick. He racked up 27 tackles and had 1.5 quarterback sacks.
Wide receiver Julio Meza, quarterback Davis Winebarger and linemen Keith Combs and Jonothan Joiner were honorable mention on the offensive side of the ball, while Tallen Chavez, Josh Koch, Syler Berntson and John Aguilar were HM on defense.
Meza had 14 catches for 382 yards and five scores. Koch had 70 tackles and two sacks, while Chavez had 72 tackles. Aguilar recorded 53 tackles from his defensive back spot. Winebarger threw for 940 yards and Bernston registered 32 tackles, two forced fumbles and a sack.
