With Thanksgiving less than a day a away, several military posts will bring a little cheer to Churchill County residents.
American Legion Post 16 will serve turkey dinners as part of the Meals on Wheels program administered by the Churchill County Senior Center. With the center closed on Thursday, volunteer cooks from the American Legion and volunteer drivers from the Association of Aviation Ordnancemen Chapter 21 at Naval Air Station Fallon wheel into action early in the morning. The America Legion at 90 N. Ada St., also hosts a Thanksgiving dinner at 11 a.m. for the community, free of charge.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1002 also serves a Thanksgiving dinner at the VFW Hall, 405 S. Maine Street, from 2-4 p.m. The VFW will serve its Christmas dinner on Dec. 22.
Most federal, county and city government offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday to observe Thanksgiving. The city, though, has garbage service on both days. Churchill County schools and Western Nevada College are closed for classes today through Friday. NAS Fallon is operating on its holiday schedule. The U.S. Post Office on Maine Street is closed Thursday but open Friday-Saturday, while the Pony Express Station is closed Thursday and open Friday.
Check with your financial institutions on their Friday schedules.
