Used cooking oil will be collected at drop-off sites

Bently Biofuels and the Western Sustainability Pollution and Prevention Network are teaming up to provide collection sites so residents can get rid of cooking oil used to deep-fry their holiday turkeys in an environmentally friendly way. Collection bins will be placed in locations today through New Year’s Eve.

Recycling used cooking oil diverts the oil from landfills, where it generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and reduces the costly effects of fats, oils, grease buildup in municipal sewer pipes. Bently Biofuels recycles used cooking oil into biodiesel.

To recycle used cooking oil, allow it to cool and pour it into a leak-proof container. Be sure to remove bones, food particles and any other trash or contaminants. Then, take the oil to one of the following locations: the parking lot west of the Carson City Public Woks building, 3505 Butti Way; recycling bins at the Carson City Landfill, 3600 Flint Road; Douglas County Transfer Station, 902 Dump Road in Gardnerville; Bently, 1089 Stockyard Road in Minden; or Bently Biofuels Outpost, 1350 Buckeye Road in Minden. Pour the oil into the marked bins.
