CASI fundraisers help further a vital mission

Carson Animal Services Initiative is a nonprofit dedicated to raising money to help our city build a new animal shelter. In the last two weeks, CASI has hosted the 5K9 fun run/walk and the Pooch Plunge, and I am grateful to say that both events were a huge success!

Thank you to the CASI volunteers for putting in many hours to help ensure that our fundraisers and community outreach programs are successful. Thank you to the folks at the Carson City Health and Human Services and Carson City Parks and Recreation Department for providing post-race refreshments and tours of the animal shelter on Sept. 21, and for allowing CASI the use of the pool for our Pooch Plunge on Sept. 28. Finally, thank you to the people who came out to spend time with your animals and support CASI’s mission of “Building Shelter, Building Community.”

CASI has a big job ahead as our goal is to raise two million dollars to assist in the construction of a new animal shelter — a building that is able to provide the services our community needs. Please help the cause by supporting CASI through membership, volunteering, and/or participating in our fundraisers. Most importantly, please spay and neuter your pets and encourage others to do the same. As a community, we can create a better situation for homeless pets.

Thank you for making Fishing Day a success

On behalf of the Carson City Host Lions Club, I would like to thank all those who helped to make the Tom Brooks Memorial Kid’s Fishing Day held on Sept. 14 a huge success. Approximately 140 kids were provided an opportunity to fish with the assistance of members from the Carson Fly Fishing Club, Kid’s Fishing Derby, the Nevada Department of Wildlife and Carson City Host Lions. Young anglers also got to try out archery with the Clear Creek Bowmen Archery Club of Carson City and BB gun shooting with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Because of the many generous donors, all kids were provided a T-shirt, bait, hooks and a fishing rod if they didn’t have one. There were also raffle prizes that included four beautiful bicycles.

Al Porta golf tourney a smashing success

Howling winds and spitting clouds did nothing to dampen spirits or the success of this year’s Al Porta Memorial Golf Tournament held at Eagle Valley Golf Course on Sept. 21.

Thirty four golfers and other donors who couldn’t attend raised $1,527 for the Veterans Guest House in Reno. Eagle Valley Golf also donated coffee and a generous luncheon for the players who gathered to honor the contributions of Al Porta to the state of Nevada and our nation.

Porta served a water pollution control engineer for the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and served our nation as a WWII veteran. The Veterans Guest House provides “a home away from home” for the vets and their families while they receive medical treatment at the VA hospital.

Congrats to winners at Stroke to Help tourney

Soroptimist International of Carson City congratulates the following winning teams for its 12th annual Stroke to Help golf tournament held at Eagle Valley Golf Courses.

On the West Course, the team of Paul McIlwee, Rob Brehm, Jason Koop, and Bill Hammons took first place honors, with Pat Leeds, Randy Dunham, Vern Peyette, and Dave Nirutz second, and Steve Mims, Steve Loos, Sheldon Kop, and Gary Turner coming in third.

On the East Course, Karen Peterson, Marilyn Lewis, Dorothy Timian Palmer, and Ted Michel took first place, with Paul Criak, Jim Hodges, Dan Hollman, and Ken Napoletano in second place, and Dave Merrill, Greg Bushner, Eric Sinkey, and Taylor Mathews in third.

Sheldon Kop, David Dailey, and Kristen Nunus won prizes for closest to the pin.

The Soroptimist Stroke to Help tournament raises money to fight breast cancer in our community, paying for mammograms, ultrasounds, and biopsies for local women through physician referrals. In the past 12 years, this Soroptimist program has raised and paid out over $140,000 to provide lifesaving care for 1,244 area women ranging in age from 14 to 71 years old. Carson City Soroptimist is grateful for the wonderful community support — players, donors, and sponsors — shown for this important program and once again for making this fundraiser a success.
