Dayton sweeps Lowry

Despite playing without standout Madi Foley, the Dayton volleyball team swept Lowry in three games Thursday night (25-18, 25-17, 25-17).

Foley, who injured her leg before the game, will rest until next week’s game.

In her place, Ashley Vickers and Taryn Schriner contributed 15 and nine kills respectively. Schriner added 10 digs and Vickers added six. Shalia Powell had 27 assists for the Dust Devils.

“It was a total team effort,” said coach Monica Halverson. “I couldn’t be more proud of this team. They are just amazing.”

Dayton, 26-1 overall and 10-0 in league, hosts South Tahoe on Tuesday.

VC sweeps Excel Christian

Nicole Huffman served up eight aces and had 17 assist to lead Virginia City to a 25-8, 25-8 and 25-22 win over Excel Christian to improve to 8-0 in league and 15-2 overall.

Niki D’Agostino had eight kills and seven aces, while Sakura Brandon contributed seven digs.

VC hosts Pyramid Lake at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Douglas girls advance

The Douglas High girls tennis team defeated McQueen 13-5 on Thursday afternoon in a Northern Division I Region Team Tournament semifinal that was closer than the score shows.

Douglas (10-0) won three sets in tie-breakers to advance past McQueen (8-2) to the tournament finals today against Reno (10-0) at 3 p.m. at the Caughlin Athletic Club in Reno. The defending region champion Reno Huskies advanced with a 14-4 win on Thursday against Galena.

The Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team of Kellie Hergenrader and Tara Cottrill won tie-breakers against their second- and third-round opponents — rallying from 4-1 deficits both times.

Courtney McKimmey also came from behind to win her first round No. 2 singles set and freshman Maggie Rich won 6-1 at No. 3 singles as the Tigers took an early 4-2 lead. Five of the six sets in the first round were decided by scores of 6-3 or closer.

Douglas freshman Madelyn Landerfelt remained unbeaten for the season as she won all three of her sets. Team co-captains Kelly Sonnemann and Katelin Teigen won all three of their sets.
