Carson boys nipped by Spanish Springs

SPARKS — High Desert leader Spanish Springs dealt Carson a 2-1 loss in a Division I boys soccer match Wednesday night.

The loss dropped Carson to 8-3-1 with four games left in the regular season, Carson hosts Damonte Ranch Saturday at 11.

“We played well enough,” coach Mehdi Samii said. “Spanish Springs was a good opponent, and I hope we can learn from this loss.”

Cristian Hernandez scored Carson’s only goal, Hernandez has 12 goals this season.

Carson girls fare well

Carson High performed well on the first day of the NIAA regionals at Carson High and Centennial Park Wednesday.

The tournament started at CHS, but some matches had to be moved to Centennial later in the day.

Preeta Amin and Lizzie Flansberg won 6-1 and 6-4 top reach the second round. The Senators’ other doubles tandem of Amanda Breen and Anya Woodbury lost 6-1 and 6-2.

In singles, Katy Breeding advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Shaina Segura also advanced with a 6-1 and 7-5 win.

The boys and girls continue play today at 9 a.m. at Caughlin Athletic Club.

Season over for CHS

RENO — Carson High’s golf season officially ended on Wednesday when the team failed to finish first or second, and Heather Evans was unsuccessful in her bid to be one of the top five individuals to advance to the state meet.

Spanish Springs (630) and Bishop Manogue (673) both qualified for state. McQueen was third at 679, Wooster was fourth at 735 and Carson was fifth at 743. Reno was sixth at 764 followed by Douglas and Reed.

Evans tied for 12th with Manogue’s Kristen Eissman. Both finished at 171 for 36 holes. Erica Gallegos was 23rd at 187 and Callen Aten was 24th at 192. Taylor Krupp tied for 26th with a 193 after a second-round 89. Bethany Kniffen and Ashley Andreas finished 32nd and 47th, respectively. Kniffen shot 98, her best tournament round, and Aten shot a career-best 92

Douglas’ Koko Terada shot a second-round 71 and finished tied for second at 154 with Trae Jones of Spanish Springs. Katrina Prendergast of Spanish Springs was the medalist with a 36-hole total of 145.

“I’m really happy that the girls came on strong at the end, and at the same time, sad for Heather,” coach Jeff Rispin said. “She has been our team leader the last two years. This is a great group of girls.”

VOLLEYBALL

Smith Valley sweeps VC

The Lady Muckers lost their first league match of the season (10-1), falling 28-30, 19-25 and 22-25 to Smith Valley Tuesday night.

Niki D’Agostino led VC with 13 kills, five aces and 14 digs. Nicole Huffman had nine digs, while Maegan Wheeler had 10 digs and six assists.
