Doctor Zhivago continues film series

CAC’s fall film series, “Big Screen Epics” continues tonight with a screening of the 1965 film “Doctor Zhivago” at the Art Center tonight.

Tickets are $7 for CAC members, $10 for nonmembers and will be available in the Center’s Art Bar beginning at 6 p.m. and the film will begin at 7 p.m.

“Doctor Zhivago” was directed by David Lean and stars Julie Christie, Omar Sharif, Rod Steiger, Alec Guinness and Geraldine Chaplin. It won five Academy Awards including one for Best Cinematography, Screen Writing, Art Direction, Costume Design, Musical Score.

It was also nominated for Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Film and Sound Editing. In addition to the Oscar nominations, the film won Golden Globes for Best Picture, Actor, Director, Original Musical Score, Screenplay. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer (Geraldine Chaplin). And, it was also nominated for the Palme d’Or, the grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Based on a novel by Boris Pasternak, the film tells the story of a young doctor/poet who falls for a political activist’s wife during the Russian Revolution and traces their trials and tribulations during this tumultuous period.

The film series will conclude with a showing of the 1984 film, “Once Upon A Time In America on Nov. 1.

The next time you’re in Reno, you might want to pay a visit to Stremmel Gallery and check out their current exhibition, “Beneath One Sky,” new paintings by the South Lake Tahoe artist, Phyllis Shafer.

The landscape paintings catalog her impressions of the Sierra Nevada, from Tahoe to Yosemite and are a prelude to her large scale Nevada Museum of Art show, which will open in February, 2014.

Shafer has said that her works are not straight reportage of what she sees, but rather an exploration of the narrative possibilities that she senses in formations in the landscape. The gallery is located at 1400 S. Virginia and is open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. You can call the gallery at 775-786-0558 for more information.
