Carson fans, you missed a great game

For those of you who stayed away from Carson High on Friday night, you missed a great football game. I’ve been covering Carson football since Blair Roman’s second season as head coach, and Friday’s 27-26 victory ranks as one of the best I’ve seen in my time at Carson.

I was a little stunned to see just a small contingent from Galena until I learned that the Grizzlies are on a school break. Washoe School District is on a new schedule this year.

Anyway, here is my top five all-time games since I’ve been covering Carson High.

5T. Carson 32, Reed 30 (2012): Many people might be surprised that this game was picked so low. It was after all a nonleague game, and in the grand scheme of things, didn’t really matter that much. Matt Nolan caught the game-winning TD pass from Garrett Schafer on a controversial call. Reed fans still think they got screwed.

5T. Carson 27, Galena 26 (2013): This one had more twist and turns than an amusement park ride. Joey Thurman made big plays on both sides of the ball, and Nevin Elliott showed just how hard he can run and block.

4. Carson 16, Douglas 13 (2010): Austin Pacheco kicked the game-winner in the fourth quarter at Douglas. This was one of the better defensive games that I’ve seen. Yards and points were tough to come by.

3. Carson 54, Reed 27 (2009): Reed had drilled Carson the previous year in Sparks, and many people, including yours truly, expected the same result. It was Dylan Sawyers’ coming out party, and QB Blake Plattsmier ran for more than 140 yards in the upset win.

2. Carson 27, Manogue 24 (2011): Pacheco won the game when he drilled a wind-aided 64-yard field goal with 27 seconds left to snap a 24-all tie. It was the second-longest kick in Nevada history.

1. Carson 20, Reed 0 (2010): I chose this as my top game for a couple of reasons. The first because it was probably the best defensive game I’d ever seen Carson play. Another reason is that this was the first year of splitting from two divisions into one big league. As luck would have it, Carson didn’t have to play either Reed or McQueen during the regular season, and as the Senators piled up win after win, people weren’t convinced Carson was for real until it blanked the Raiders in the playoffs.

Jonathan Singer, a four-year player on Carson High’s golf team, has been named assistant men’s golf coach at Columbia University in New York City.

Singer, who graduated magna cum laude from Adelphi University this past spring, is a graduate student at Columbia. He is majoring in clinical psychology with an emphasis in geropsychology and research in elder issues.

Singer was the 2009 Region Player of the Year. He led Carson’s team in scoring and was captain of the team for three seasons. He finished second out of 111 players at the 2009 Winter California Junior Tour.

Singer is a two-time All-Northeast-10 selection, with seven individual top-five finishes. He received the faculty recognition award twice in addition to the Presidential Student Athletic Award, which is awarded to two student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the playing field.
