LAS VEGAS — A plan to power the famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign with solar panels is moving forward after the groups working on the project promised to make it easy on the eyes.
Clark County commissioners approved the solar plan Tuesday. The Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://bit.ly/15riXff) reports groundbreaking is set for this fall, and the project should be complete by Jan. 1.
Two Nevada nonprofits focused on renewable energy had proposed rewiring the sign with a private grant from the Virginia-based Consumer Electronics Association and donations from other organizations.
Their plan called for three fake trees equipped with solar panels painted blue to match the welcome sign’s posts.
Commissioners gave the OK after designers said they’d move the solar trees so they wouldn’t show up in tourists’ photos.
