Galena outlasts Carson, 10-8

Sam Burketta and Kyle Kunz won all three of their doubles matches, but it wasn’t enough as Carson High’s boys tennis team fell to Galena 10-8 Tuesday afternoon at Carson High.

The loss dropped Carson to 0-2 on the season.

The CHS duo won 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0, the only players to go 3-0 on the day.

Jace Zampirro and Trevor Sollberger went 2-1, winning 6-2 and 6-2. They lost 7-5 in their third set. Jake Jones and Jared Hearn went 1-2 on the day.

Josh Breen went 1-2 at No. 1 singles, while Aaron Woodbury also went 1-2 at No. 2 singles.

Carson girls lose to Galena

RENO — Katy Breeding won all three of her matches, but the rest of her teammates went winless in a 15-3 loss to Galena Tuesday afternoon.

Breeding won two sets by 6-1 scores and another by a 6-2 score. Abbey Dudley and Preeta Amin both lost tough singles matches.

Senators beat Galena

RENO — Josilyn Daggs scored two goals to lead Carson past Galena, 2-0 on Tuesday.

The Senators were able to get on the board in the ninth minute when Daggs scored off of a throw-in from Jamie Perez. Daggs added her second goal in the 77th minute, this one unassisted. Chantel Torres and Melissa Glanzmann both had an excellent game for the 2-0 Senators. Carson hosts Manogue on Saturday.

In JV action, Mallory Otto scored in the fifth minute off of a cross from Molly Otto as the JV team rolled to a 3-0 win over Galena. Galilea Cid added the Senators’ second goal in the 23rd minute from a pass Miriam Torres. Molly Otto scored Carson’s last goal in the 42nd minute off of a cross from Mallory Otto.

VOLLEYBALL

Dayton wins at Truckee

Dayton improved to 16-1 on the season with a four-game win at Truckee on Tuesday.

Game scores were: 25-19, 26-24, 23-25 and 27-25.

“They have such great chemistry,” said coach Monica Halverson. “They fight for every point; it’s really fun to watch.”

Maddi Foley closed out the match with two kills for the Dust Devils.

Dayton, 1-0 in league, plays at Lowry on Friday.

Foley led the team with 21 kills. Taryn Schriner added 13. Peach Coons had five aces for the Dust Devils.

In JV action, Truckee won 25-17 and 25-13.

GOLF

Carson 4th in first outing

Carson High’s golf team finished fourth at the first Sierra League Invitational of the season Monday afternoon.

Bishop Manogue won the event with a 337 followed by Douglas at 390 and Wooster at 404. Carson finished at 419. No scores were reported for Damonte Ranch or Galena.

“It was disappointing, but not entirely unexpected given that we had very little time on the course due to all the recent smoke,” coach Jeff Rispin said. “I really didn’t expect a lot, but I was still disappointed in some of what I saw today. Everybody had some nice moments, but overall it wasn’t what we hoped for.”

Heather Evans shot a team-best 89 and Taylor Krupp finished with a 97. Erica Gallegos (112), Bethany Kniffen (121), Megan Goodale (127) and Samantha Byassee (141, non scoring) completed the Carson roster.

CROSS COUNTRY

Elissas solid for Dayton at Sparks

SPARKS — Hanna Elissa won the small-school varsity race at last weekend’s Twilight Invitational. Elissa covered the 4K course in 18:31.

Her brother, Aaron, finished fifth in the large school boys race in a time of 13:44.

Dayton finished second as a team in the small-school varsity race with 31 points. JJ Ply was second in 15:35, Nick Langstaff was sixth in 16:00, Oakley Workman was ninth in 16:46, Tyler Brown 10th in 16:55 and Thomas Liddle was 11th in 17:04.
