Reno boxer Carlos Gaytan is in stable condition after suffering head trauma during the sixth annual Fallon Fights on Aug. 24 at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.
According to promoter Terry Lane of Let’s Get It On Promotions, Gaytan was sedated for nearly two weeks after doctors discovered blood on his brain.
Gaytan was knocked down in the second round of his bout, but fought for another two rounds before the fight was stopped.
He was transported to Banner Churchill Community Hospital before being sent to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.
Lane said he has been receiving constant updates through Gaytan’s family, although the family has kept Gaytan’s condition out of the media spotlight. Lane, however, was contacted by the LVN to discredit rumors that Gaytan had died.
Lane said Gaytan is undergoing physical therapy to strengthen his muscles, specifically his legs.
As for his career, Lane said Gaytan will never box again, but it has been the furthest thing from the family’s mind for the past several weeks.
Lane said doctors have not pinned down a cause of the injury, and it could have been cause from a sparring session, cutting weight or a blow to the head during the bout.
Gaytan was slated to fight in Las Vegas in early August, Lane said, but the bout fell through and he was added to the Rural Rumble card. Lane said Gaytan cut weight, which siphons water from the brain leaving it vulnerable for serious injury, which could have been a factor for the bleeding.
“Tommy and I are still pretty shaken up by it,” Terry Lane said of he and his brother.
