Nevada photographers honored

Four Nevada photographers, Janet Johnson of Denio, Gary Butler of Wellington, Linda Hammond of Fallon and Diane McAllister of Reno are being recognized by RANGE magazine for their work.

RANGE is a national publication devoted to the issues that threaten the West, its people, lifestyles, lands and wildlife. For more than 20 years, the annual calendar and a photo contest have starred cowboys, sheepherders and their critters.

Johnson and Butler are featured lens artists in the 2014 Real Buckaroo Calendar produced by RANGE, and Hammond and McAllister were selected as Merit Winners in the magazine’s 2013 photo contest, which is showcased in the magazine.

The month of April shows a charming photo of Mattie Rose as she hauls milk bottles to the barn to help feed the leppy calves. She is serious about her “job.” The image was taken at the Alder Creek Ranch in Denio.

It’s branding time for Yerington cowboys Jack Marriott (header) and his 88-year-old father-in-law Francis Goettsch (heeler). Taken at Dick and Linda Huntsberger’s H Bar C Ranch in Smith Valley, Butler’s action shot can be found in the calendar’s month of May.

As for the 2013 Outback Roundup Merit Winners, Hammond was recognized for her image of “Tres Hombres,” a profile of three bighorn sheep taken on Clan Alpine ridge east of Fallon.

Diane McAllister was in Virginia Highlands in Storey County to capture a wild colt rearing up and showing off his mane. The view earned her a Merit Award.

In addition to the four Nevada photographers, Larry Turner of Malin, Oregon, received a Merit Award for a striking portrait of Fred Reed, a self-proclaimed desert rat, who has traveled and explored the back roads of Nevada throughout his life. His face is like a road map of life.

Photo contest winners are in a prime position to have their photographs featured in the magazine, promoted on RANGE’s website and Facebook, and selected for other special projects, such as the calendar. In addition to competition prizes, photographers receive additional compensation for other uses.
