Kipling, Gutierrez, Kolb shine in pool

Three Carson Tigershark swimmers placed second in their respective age groups at last weekend’s Molly Lahlum Memorial Autumn Freeze short-course meet in Minden.

Dagen Kipling, 15, won the 200 breast and was second in the 400 IM, 200 free, 500 free, 100 fly, 200 fly and 100 breast. He was third in the 200 IM and 100 free, and fourth in the 100 back.

Brett Kolb, 13, won the 1650 free, 100 and 200 back, was second in the 100 free, fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 fly.

A.J. Gutierrez, 12, won the 100, 200 and 500 free, and placed second in the 100 and 200 IM, 50 and 100 back, 100 breast and 100 fly.

Placing in the top three were:

Kaly Branco, 14, won the 1000 free, was fourth in the 1650 free, fifth in 100 and 200 back, sixth in 500 free, 12th in 200 free, and 13th in 100 free.

Mack Chambers, 8, was third in the 25 free and 50 back.

Ewan Kalley, 7, was third in the 25 breast, fourth in 25 free, 100 free, 25 backstroke and 25 fly, fifth in 50 back and sixth in 50 free.

Katarina Klatt, 7, was third in the 25 back, 25 fly and 50 free, and fifth in 100 free.

Matteas Klatt, 10, was second in the 200 IM, third in the 50 free, 100 backstroke and 100 fly, fifth in 100 IM, and eighth in 50 breast.

Ashley Meyer, 15, was third in the 1650 free and 200 fly, fifth in 1000 free, sixth in 500 free, ninth in 100 free, 11th in 100 fly, 12th in 50 free, 200 free and 200 IM.

Anu Praveen, 8, was third in the 25 back and 50 free.

Jay Session, 14, was third in the 200 fly, ninth in 100 breast, and 10th in 100 free and 200 IM.

Fundraiser for WNC softball scheduled

The Western Nevada College is sponsoring a 5K run/walk at 3 p.m. Nov. 3 to raise funds for the upcoming season.

The event starts and ends at El Charro Avitia Mexican restaurant, located at 4389 S. Carson St. It’s a relatively flat beginner-intermediate course that is mostly paved and suitable for anyone wishing to push a baby stroller. The entry fee is $30 for adults, which includes a dinner buffet and race T-shirt. Kids 8-17 can enter for $15, and kids younger than 8 can race for free.

Registration is available until Nov. 1 at http://beta.active.com/carson-city-nv/running/wnc-softball-5k-fundraiser. You also will be able to register on race day.

Silver State gymnasts triumph in Grass Valley

Eliana Hollar won first place all-around at level 2 by winning bars and beam, and placing second on floor.

Sara Mitchell captured the silver all-around medal by finishing second on vault and bar, and placing third on beam. Bella Planeta won gold on the floor en route to the bronze medal. Nicole Hawkins won the vault and took third on the bars.

At level 4, Brenna Mitchell won bars, placed second on beam and third on floor to win all-around. Alycia Hellwinkel won gold on the beam and floor and took second on bars to win silver in all-around. Madison Adams won silver on the vault. Elle Liebenforfer won bronze at the younger level 4.

In level 5, Lily Reid won all-around by winning bars, beam and floor.

Mitey Mites top Sparks Wolf Pack

The Carson Pop Warner Mitey Mites topped the Sparks Wolf Pack, 34-13, Saturday in Sparks.

Eduardo Orozco scored four touchdowns and Vinny Ferretti added one in the easy win. Dawson Main and Zach Guthrie added PATs.

Linemen Isiah Abel, Nathan McKee, Andrew Case, Schuyler Clark and Caid Milligan played well on offense. Keegan Ferris, Eli Foutz, Isaac Avina, David Smith, Alex Myrehn, Seth Knox, Damian Morris, Troy Winkler and Paul Perez played well on defense.

The Mitey Mites play Saturday against the Reno North Wolf Pack.

Hala foursome wins CVGC scramble event

Roger Hala, Bill Allen, Joe Morrison and Chuck Householder won Flight A in the Carson Valley Golf Club scramble event on Sept. 23.

Gary Schreiber, Jeff Schreiber, Ken Smitreski and Jim Korzeniewski finished second in Flight A. Paul Lockwood, Larry Lockwood, John Guidicatti and Neil Bain won Flight B. Gerry Bing, John Cary, Jim Arens and Gary Carsten were second in Flight B,

Good turnout for CTC tournament

Mark Mettler defeated Ryan Johnson, 6-4 and 6-2, to win the men’s A single title at the recent Carson Tennis Club’s Fall Classic.

A total of 65 players entered the event.

James Gonzales chalked up 24 points to win the men’s B singles. Mettler teamed with Brian Bigelow to beat Ryan Johnson and Yazir Naum-Barios 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 for the men’s A double championship. Mike Lannoy and Steve Crouch defeated Heck Mata and Grant Thompson 6-1 and 6-1 for the men’s B doubles crown. Laura Hale and Angala Free won the women’s B doubles crown with a 3-0 record. Masha Long and Kelsey Lemming defeated DeAnn Fipps and Mike Fipps, 6-4, 6-7 and 6-3, to win the mixed A doubles. Bob McCann and Yrma Haro defeated James Gonzales and Vickie Creelman, 6-3 and 6-0, for the mixed B doubles crown.

Scott Gillespie (men’s A singles), Brandon Rank (men’s B singles), Ray Fugitt and Hersch Herschman (men’s A doubles), Anne Pomroy and Kaleigh Carlson (women’s B doubles), and Amy Frederick and Bob Green (mixed B doubles) won consolation titles.
