Milkman: A poor — but honest — milkman went into business carrying milk vessels in his hands and his business grew. He eventually had to buy a horse. The horse had previously been in the service of the fire department. The milkman continued to do well with his old horse doing him good service. One day he stopped in front of the house of one of his customers and the fire alarm struck. The old horse started down the street as fast as he could go. Away went the milk cans, wagon and all. The horse had heard the call.

All sorts: Chickens and ice cream at the Ormsby House today, 25 cents. Sprigtail duck dinner today, 25 cents at the Capitol Restaurant. It would be a good idea for the watering cart to water Second Street from Main to the entrance of the racetrack.

Carson High School: George Franks defeated Larry Jeppson by a ballot of 63-58 for the coveted office of president of the Carson High School Student Association. Other officers elected were Bob Williams, vice president; Robert Punches, faculty member, and senior representative Duane Berning.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
