Whorton to talk about prison escapes Oct. 16
Glen Whorton, former director of the Nevada Department of Corrections, will talk about escapes from the Nevada State Prison at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Silver Oak Executive Conference Center.
Topics include the Great Escape of 1871, a Nevadan with the longest escape and return in the nation’s history, and other incidents through the 1980s.
The presentation is part of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society’s monthly series about the prison’s history. Admission is free.

‘Haunted’ events are set in Carson Valley
Douglas County Historical Society’s haunted weekend Oct. 17-21 will feature ghost walks, cemetery tours and ghost hunts.
The Historian Inn Market Café, 1427 Highway 395 in Gardnerville, will host a free meet and greet with ghost hunters at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17.
Ghost walk tours of Gardnerville will depart the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395 in Gardnerville, at 6 and 7 p.m. Oct. 18. A séance will follow at 9 p.m. at the Cultural Center.
On Oct. 19, guided tours of the Mottsville Cemetery will depart every 15 minutes starting at 6 p.m.
The Genoa Courthouse Museum, 2304 Main St., will hold a ghost investigation from 9 to 11:30 p.m. Oct. 19.
Ghost walk tours of Genoa will depart the Courthouse Museum at 10 a.m. Oct. 21.
