The Nevada Appeal and its staffers won several awards that were announced Saturday night at the Nevada Press Association’s convention.
Photographer Shannon Litz took first, second and third place in the Best Portrait category of the Better Newspaper Conference, as well as second place in Best Feature Photo. Fellow photographer Jim Grant took first and third place in Best Feature Photo, second place in Best Illustrated Photo and third place in Best Sports Photo.
Education reporter Teri Vance won second place in the Best Exploratory Journalism category, and city reporter John Barrette, who represented the Appeal at Saturday’s convention, took first place in Best Entertainment Writing.
The Appeal took first place for Best Overall Design and second place in Best Page One Design.
Most of the awards are divided among five classes. The Appeal is in Class II, involving newspapers printed more than once a week with circulation of less than 15,000.
The Press Association is the trade organization for the state’s newspaper industry. It represents seven daily and 35 weekly newspapers in Nevada and the Lake Tahoe region of Northern California and is led by former Appeal editor Barry Smith.
