Mayor’s NV 150 group zeroes in on June events

The Mayors NV 150 Commission identified three major dates for activities that local residents can celebrate the state’s sesquicentennial.

Commission members reviewed activities and other projects at their monthly meeting on Wednesday.

June 21 promises to have a plethora of activities to kick off both the summer and locale events. Tim Mitchell and Chris Hening gave an update on the Hometown Heroes event where former Greenwave athletes return to Fallon for the day.

Those who have committed to Hometown Heroes include World Champion heeler Jade Corkill, one of the top, young rodeo stars on the circuit; Ohio State University softball player Jodi Dolan, who also played professionally; NCAA volleyball national champion Jennifer Hucke, who also led Fallon to consecutive state titles 14 years ago; professional golfer Scott Smith, who has played in the Reno Tahoe Open; NCAA basketball champion Paige Sauer, who played at the University of Connecticut; and NFL and former University of Nevada football player Josh Mauga.

NFL player Harvey Dahl, who played for San Francisco, Atlanta and St. Louis, may participate in Hometown Heroes, but according to his family, he has undergone several operations.

In addition to 5K and 10K runs on that day, Relay for Life also begins its annual fundraising event at the high school later in the afternoon.

Valerie Serpa, co-chair of the mayor’s commission, said a Wells Fargo stagecoach will offer rides at Oats Park later in the day, and Rick Gray, executive director of the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority, said an NV150 Commemorative Stamp Dedication is being planned for Fallon, which will represent Northern Nevada.

“Scott Carey (who is with the state’s 150 commission) discussed with me the idea to have a dedication of the stamp in the north,” Gray said, adding that he thought having several local Pony Express riders for the dedication will lend an aura of the Old West to the occasion.

Serpa said Los Texmaniacs will cap the evening with a free outdoor concert at Oats Park.

The Aug. 15-16 weekend features an all-class reunion. Although other classes may be having their reunions at other times, the committee is urging graduates from all years to attend the reunion.

The committee has been publishing information in the Lahontan Valley News and hopes to branch out with a Facebook page in the future.

Serpa said the Dusty 45s will present a free outdoor concert at Oats Park. Prior to the concert, Gray will announce the winner of the Live Local Fallon Car.

The final date is Oct. 31, the day before the big Nevada parade in Carson City.

Michon Mackedon, co-chair, said a birthday party and dance are planned at The Gym at Venturraci Park.

Architect Frank Woodliff presented his conceptual drawings for the museum’s southeast corner where the time capsule would be placed. Mackedon said she has heard from residents that the time capsule could become a strong tradition in the community.

The committee heard short reports on other projects. Gray, though, said a grant for the telescope project was not approved. Macedon said a book on Fallon’s and Churchill County’s past has gone to the printer.
