Fajardo stars in Blue’s win over Silver team
RENO – Cody Fajardo completed 11-of-18 for 112 yards and scored a rushing touchdown as the Blue team took a 12-10 victory over the Silver in the Nevada football team’s annual spring game in front of 2,217 on Saturday at Mackay Stadium.
Sophomore wide receive Hasaan Henderson had a big day to cap a strong spring as he caught six passes for 58 yards to lead all receivers. The former quarterback also completed a 30-yard pass off a double reverse to Don Jackson.
Freshman quarterback Dante Mayes played well for the Silver team, completing four of nine for 71 yards. He also ran for 10 yards.
The Blue, made up of the first-team offense and second-team defense, jumped out front as Fajardo led them down the field on the opening drive and he punched it in from four yards out. The PAT was missed as the Blue took a 6-0 lead.
After the teams traded punts, Mayes took the Silver down inside the 10-yard line but the Blue D held and Brent Zuzo kicked the first of three field goals, a 22-yarder, to make it 6-3.
The Blue turned to the run game on the ensuing drive with Don Jackson and Nate McLaurin guiding a field-goal drive as Zuzo connected from 36 yards out to make it 9-3. Zuzo hit from 37 yards out for the Blue on their next drive to make it 12-3.
In the second half, Mayes led an impressive drive, converting a pair of third downs on long passes, both to Giles Chapman. A couple of runs by Devoreaux Stewart took the Silver to the 1-yard line and Mayes ran the read-option and took it in himself for the score to cut it to 12-10. But the Silver would not get closer.
The game marked the end of spring drills for the Wolf Pack and the 2014 campaign will kick off Aug. 30 at Mackay against Southern Utah. For ticket information, call (775) 348-PACK.
