Relay for Life

The Relay for Life is Fallon’s community gathering where everyone can join in the fight against cancer.

LVCC spring concert

The Lahontan Valley Concert Choir Spring Concert is coming on May 8 at the Churchill County Museum.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. and admission is a food donation to the local food pantry.


Mother’s Day extravaganza

The third annual Mother’s Day Extravaganza is May 3 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Fallon Convention Center.

More than 30 vendors will be there. Family portraits by a local photographer. Fallon Relay for Life will be accepting donation. So come get your Live Local Fallon passport stamped and support the community.


CCSD classes

The Churchill County School District will conduct 5th grade Human Sexuality/AIDS Education classes from May 5-14.

Cancer Warriors raffle ride

Raffle Ride will be held May 10 to benefit Scott Wilson and Christina Santiago, both Fallon cancer patients, and hosted by The Cancer Warriors for Central Nevada.

The event begins at Tu Bruthers from 9 a.m.-10 a.m and ends at Lattin Farms 12:30-4 p.m. with a lunch, Silverwing concert and raffle drawings.

There are five stops along the way to pick up raffle tickets. Cost is $20 and participants get raffle tickets at each stop, lunch, and concert. Lunch separately is $7. Additional tickets are one for $1 and ix for $5. All vehicles, auto and bike clubs are welcome.


Portuguese Festival

Annual Portuguese Festa festivities begin May 17 at the fairgrounds’ multi-purpose buidling. From 8 p.m.-1 a.m. the 9th Street Band will be playing, Linguica and rolls will be served, and drink tickets sold for bar. The queens and princesses will be crowned.

On May 18 the parade procession begins at West End Elementary to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Sopas will be served at multi-purpose building at 12:30 p.m. with an auction will to follow.


Kindergarten registration

Churchill County Schools is accepting applications for kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year Children must be five years old on or before September 30, 2014 to be eligible.

Iris show

The Lahontan Garden Club will again sponsor its annual Iris Show on May 19-23. Lovely iris from the Lahontan Valley can be viewed at the Churchill County Library. This is a non-juried event open to all. We encourage everyone to bring their iris to share. Vases will be provided. For information, contact Judy Scherr, 775-867-3189.


Toastmasters

Toastmasters Fallon will meet on 2nd and 4th Thursdays until May and then every Thursday. If you are interested in developing stronger speaking and leadership skills, join us at Jerry’s Restaurant, 1801 W. Boy Scout fundraiser

Fundraiser for Boy Scout Troop 1776. A large indoor yard sale is being held on May 2 (noon to 7p.m.) and May 3 (8 a.m.-3 p.m.).

It will be located in Epworth’s Wolf Center at the corner of Fairview and Esmeralda Streets. Furniture, clothes, and many what-nots are available.


FRIENDS activity night

FRIENDS Family Resource Center will be hosting its free annual Spring into Summer Family activity night. The event will be held May 7 from 4-6 p.m. at the Cottage School, at 255 E Stillwater.

Join us for a free fun filled evening of outdoor activities including water games, bounce house, cotton candy, face painting and much more.

East Coast tours

The NYC/Boston Tour is scheduled for Spring Break of 2015. The itinerary includes a majority of popular destinations in both cities. The 2015 Batter Up Tour is a planned trip for July 2015. The itinerary includes three MLB games, three stadium tours and the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

The next informational meeting will be May 21 at 5:30 p.m. in room B1 of CCMS (on Front Street near the cafeteria).

FAWG spring yard sale

Fallon Animal Welfare Group will hold its Spring Yard & Plant Sale May 9-10 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. both days at Allen Road Storage, Unit 51, 1151 Allen Road. We need your donations of household items, furniture, sports gear, yard and garden equipment, books, CDs, etc. No clothes, please. Call 775 217-2816 for pickup through May 7. All proceeds benefit the cats and dogs of Churchill County.


Ask a lawyer

Attorneys and specialists will offer their services for free on May 13 from 12-3 p.m. at the County Commissioners Chambers, 155 N. Taylor St.

They will answer questions on family law, wills and probate. Walk-ins only, no appointments. Also mark your calendar for future “Ask A Lawyer” dates: July 22, Sept. 23 and Nov. 25. These sessions are being sponsored by the Nevada Legal Service and the Churchill Community Coalition.

Community Service Thrift Shop

The Community Service Thrift Shop at 169 E. Center Street is open 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each weekday. We are a non-profit organization run by a group of dedicated community volunteers. We do not have room for bicycles, beds, couches or large televisions. We receive donations at the back door from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. weekdays.

April 28-May 2; Hardback & paperback books, $2 a bag.

The proceeds from our sales support families with emergency help, with a written referral from Churchill County Social Services, and also for the scholarship programs for graduating CCHS students and local nursing students.

Blue Sky Thrift Store

The Blue Sky Thrift Store (formerly Fallon Humboldt Shredders) is located at 290 S. Maine St. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Bagged clothing sales, $4 per plastic shopping bag full of clothing available on Saturdays.

We are in need of re-sellable furniture, appliances, household items and clothing. To make donations or schedule a free pickup, call 775-217-0086 or 775-423-6140.

Drop-offs are made at the store location. Proceeds help provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities and families in need through community voucher programs.


Stuf’n Such Thrift Store

The Stuf ‘n Such Thrift Store, owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., 99 S. Nevada St., 775-423-6446. Donations are accepted Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The nonprofit organization raises funds to benefit BCCH and other health-related events. Check out the new Facebook page at BCCH Auxiliary Store “Stuf N ’Such.”

Thrifty Finds

Thrifty Finds is a nonprofit store supporting Churchill County youth, 920 W. Williams Ave., Ste. 60A.

Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days per week. TF customers will no longer enter through Louie’s Dollar Plus. Our new entrance is located on the NE corner of the building (previously the donation delivery door).

We thank our customers for your patience during construction and hope that you will continue to join us for our Senior Sunday, Military Monday and Thrifty Tuesday Sales. Each week, look for the “Special Sale” in departments throughout the store.


Out of Egypt

Out of Egypt Thrift and Gift, providing for ongoing needs of food and hunger, is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Fallon Church of the Nazarene, 121 S. Allen Rd.

American Legion

The American Legion at 90 N. Ada St., Friday night dinners are open to the public. A $5 donation is asked.
The second Friday is Chef’s Choice. The fourth Friday is steak dinners.

Veterans of Foreign Wars

The VFW would like to thank everyone for there support at the breakfasts. However, there will be no more until further notice. Thank all of you that have supported it in the past.


Marine Corps League

The High Desert Detachment of the Marine Corps League meets the first Saturday each month at noon at the VFW Hall, 405 S. Maine St.
The League is open to all Marines, active, reserve, retired or honorably discharged, FMF Corpsman, families and friends, to participate in programs designed to help the community.

XL Hospice blood pressure clinic, grief groups

XL Hospice is providing a blood pressure clinic on the first Tuesday of each month from 10 a.m.-noon at the Senior Center, 310 Court St.

XL Hospice Drop-In Grief Groups meet the second Mondays at 5 p.m. and third Tuesdays at noon at the XL Hospice office 570 S. Maine St. No charge nor registration.


Serendipity Bookstore

The Serendipity Bookstore at 507 S. Maine St., features used books for sale from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Proceeds benefit the Churchill County Library. All proceeds benefit the Churchill County Library.


Square dancing

The Oasis Squares, Fallon’s square dance club meets each Friday, 7-9 p.m., Highland Estates, 570 N. Sherman St. Experienced dancers are always welcomed. Come dance in a square and make a circle of friends.

Fallon chapter, Nevada Alumni Association

The Fallon chapter of the University of Nevada Alumni Association is having its monthly meeting on May 7 at 6 p.m. at Pizza Barn.

All alums and friends of the university are invited to attend. Plans are underway to schedule a bus on May 10 to see Sara Parsons final softball games in a Nevada uniform. Parsons is a Greenwave graduate who was a multi-sport star.

Library story time

Story Time is held each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. In addition to stories, children can make a simple craft.

The library has hundreds of books on a wide variety of subjects for your enjoyment either in the building or at home.

Hearts of Gold Quilters

The Hearts of Gold Quilters meets every Thursday 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Fallon Convention Center, 100 Campus Way. All quilters are welcome.

We are a group of 40 busy quilters who meet weekly to make donation quilts, as well as working on our own projects.

An average of 80 quilts per year are donated to our community.



MOPS meeting

The Mothers of Preschoolers group meets 10 a.m.-noon the second and fourth Tuesday each month at Parkside Bible Fellowship.

Rainbow Treasures Gift Shop is located inside the front lobby of Banner Churchill Community Hospital, 801 E. Williams Ave. Hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Rainbow Treasures Gift Shop is owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, a nonprofit organization. Newborn gifts, handbags, See’s candy, watches, jewelry, home decor items and more are available.

The Fallon Tea Party meets the first Tuesday and third Thursday each month at the Churchill County Library annex, 7 p.m., South Maine and Fairview (behind the bookstore).

Fallon Elks Lodge

Dinner — The Fallon Elks Lodge, 93 W. Center St., serves dinner the first and third Friday of each month.

‘Celebrating Us’ art project

Artists, photographers, artisans of all genre are invited to showcase their work in the “Celebrating Us” project, a joint venture of the Churchill County Museum and the county.

High school equivalence classes

WNC Fallon will be offering free HSE classes for students interested in attaining their high school equivalence diploma. Registration for these classes will be held the first Monday and Tuesday of each month and is on going. You must attend both days of registration.

ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada is a nonprofit organization that provides English tutoring at no cost through the help of volunteer tutors.

Child support enforcement

Child support enforcement services are available through the Churchill County District Attorney’s office. The staff may be able to help establish parentage and help obtain a child support order to include medical support. Pick up an application at the Churchill County Child Support Office at 165 N. Ada St., or visit www.churchillcounty.org and follow the links to the District Attorney’s Child Support Division.

Class of 1964

The Churchill County High School class of 1964 is seeking the addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of class members in order to invite them to the 50th reunion in August in Fallon.

Dinner and a no-host cocktail party are scheduled for Aug. 15. Pre-registration is Aug. 14.
