With Hot August Nights winding down, perhaps you’ve seen enough classic cars and are ready for something different. Well, Fernley 95A Speedway has Monster Truck Madness going on this weekend, with action starting at 6 p.m. this evening and again at 4 p.m. Sunday. The event will also feature a Monster Truck versus Sprint Car wheelie contest, $5 rides in a 10-passenger Monster Truck, and two-car chain races. Admission is $15 for adults and only $5 for kids 3-12. Kids 2 and younger are free.

Last Saturday at Fernley 95A Speedway, IMCA Modified points leader Cory Sample extended that lead, charging from deep in the pack in the A main and holding off Shawn Natenstedt, Josh Ogg, and Robert Miller on two late-race restarts to take the win. Antonio Aragon was untouchable in the Pro Stock main, besting David Rauscher, Rob Grace, and B.J. Pearson, returning to competition driving Malen Gonzales’ car. The Hobby Stock win went to Rick Miller, who did a masterful job of holding off points leader Carl Barlow in the closing laps. Justin McIlvain ran away and hid in the Super Stock 4 A main, chased home by Jesse James, Steven Crook, Justin Busch, and Kenny Martin. And Mark Serchio Jr. made a late-race pass to snatch victory from Anthony Adams in the Pure Stock A main.

Carson City’s Mackena Bell took part in a panel discussion put on by the NASCAR Foundation at last week’s Teen Summit in Charlotte, N.C. Bell and her Revolution Racing teammates discussed the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math in today’s NASCAR. Bell then headed for Iowa Speedway to take part in the second K&N Pro Series East/West shootout of the season, hoping to improve on her 19th place finish in the first Iowa race.

The 21st Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis saw a resurgent Jeff Gordon score his fifth win at Indy and his 90th victory in NASCAR’s top series. It was also Gordon’s second win of the season, ensuring him of a spot in the Chase no matter what transpires in the regular season’s final six races. In addition to Gordon, three other drivers clinched a Chase berth at Indy: Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, and Joey Logano joined Brad Keselowski and Dale Earnhardt Jr., who clinched at New Hampshire. Denny Hamlin might also have joined that group, but post-race inspection revealed some technical violations that cost the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota driver 75 points, dropping him from 10th to 21st in the standings. The same points penalty applied to the owner, and crew chief Darian Grubb was fined $125,000. Grubb was also suspended for six races and placed on probation for six months, as was car chief Wesley Sherrill. The team will appeal the penalty, although Grubb and Sherrill will begin serving their suspensions starting with this weekend’s Pocono race.

This weekend marks NASCAR’s second visit of the season to Pocono, where both the Sprint Cup drivers and Camping World Truck competitors will have to cope with Pocono’s tricky triangle. Meanwhile, the Nationwide series is at Iowa along with the East and West divisions of the K&N Pro series.

Mercedes Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton scored his second miraculous drive in a row in Hungary last Sunday. After a fuel leak and fire kept him from qualifying, he started the race dead last from the pit lane. Utilizing a combination of strategy and flat-out brilliant driving, he held off teammate Nico Rosberg in the waning laps to score a podium finish in third place. In a series and at a track both notorious for difficulty in passing, Hamilton proved he’s one of the best drivers in the world. Congratulations also go to winner Daniel Ricciardo, who once again out-scored his four-time world champion Red Bull teammate, Sebastian Vettel. Fernando Alonso muscled his Ferrari to second place.

In NHRA Action at Sonoma last weekend, Courtney Force bested dad John Force, scoring her second season win and fifth career Funny Car victory. Khalid alBalooshi beat teammate Shawn Langdon to take Top Fuel honors. Jason Line won the Pro Stock category, and Eddie Krawiec was the victor in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
