FIZZ BOOM READ, the 2014 summer reading program, comes to a close on Aug. 14 with That’s Magic Entertainment and all-time favorite magician Wayne Ferguson.

Show times are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Stop by and join the fun!

The Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the Churchill Library Association, Churchill County Communications Independent Telecommunications Pioneer Association, and the Officer Spouses Club at Naval Air Station Fallon.

The Churchill County Association presents Nevada’s Sesquicentennial Celebration 1864-2014 annual Beer and Wine Tasting on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. This event will be held at the library. It will include a wine and beer tasting, silent auction and Nevada Quiz.

All proceeds benefit the Churchill County Library. Tickets are $25 per person and are available in advance at the library or at the door the day of the event.

The Library Repurpose Project is underway. This project will use the current building and includes a redesign of existing space to better meet the needs of present and future users. Details are being worked out and plans finalized. The schematic design, including project scope and proposed floor plan, are available for viewing via the website at www.churchillcountylibrary.org and at the library. Your comments are welcome.

New materials are available daily at the library — new fiction and nonfiction, bestsellers, new DVDs, books on CD and paperbacks. The library also has new material to download to your device via the website including magazines, books and audio. A few to note are the following:

“The Most Dangerous Book: the Battle for James Joyce’s Ulysses” by Kevin Birmingham — The book that is considered by many to be the most important of the English language underwent a long and arduous censorship battle before it was finally published.

This is a fascinating account of the social norms of the time and it is impossible to read without considering the changes from then and now.

“My Salinger Year” by Joanna Rakoff — A beautifully written memoir about literary New York in the 1990s.

“Lucky Us” by Amy Bloom — A beautifully written work of fiction which follows a young girls life through adulthood chronicling heartbreak, luck and love.

Carol Lloyd is the director of the Churchill County Library. She is available at the library or by email at celloyd@clan.lib.nv.us.
