Fair gets kudos; final accounting coming

Kudos for the Nevada Sesquicentennial Fair opened and closed the Thursday morning session of Carson City’s Board of Supervisors.

Terrie McNutt, chairperson of the city’s Chamber of Commerce board, and two others used opening public comment to thank the board for authorizing the fair and those who worked to put it on. When Deputy City Manager Marena Works later gave a preliminary report on last weekend’s fair at Fuji Park and Fairgrounds, the board credited her and those working with her for putting together a solid first-time event. Her report praised those who helped.

“Your departments put their hearts and souls into this,” Works told board members just before the lunch break. “I had 100 percent support from Public Works. Parks was amazing. Your staff was incredible.” She also praised Susan Taylor, fair manager, and the Fandango Casino complex and Costco for working with the city to minimize parking issues. She asked if the city backs another fair, the decision give ample lead time.

Mayor Robert Crowell said the fair was an example of community ideas that mushroom into great events. Supervisor Jim Shirk called it a “fabulous event” and said he would support such an effort in the future. Supervisor John McKenna also lauded the fair, though he expressed hope future fairs could be handled by a private sector organization.

Supervisors Brad Bonkowski and Karen Abowd also were complimentary while asking that a final report later include economic impacts on bars, restaurants and lodging in the city.
