LAS VEGAS — A federal judge has denied a Nevada death row inmate’s latest challenge to his 1995 murder and attempted sexual assault convictions.
The Nevada Attorney General’s Office announced that 51-year-old William Witter’s writ of habeas corpus was denied on Tuesday. Witter had argued there were multiple errors at trial and his lawyer was ineffective.
Witter was convicted of murder, attempted murder, attempted sexual assault and burglary after a 1993 attack on a married couple in a Las Vegas parking lot.
Police say Witter sexually assaulted the woman and then stabbed her husband when he arrived during the incident and tried to intervene.
Jurors who noted a previous violent felony conviction on Witter’s record sentenced him to death.
Witter remains at Ely State Prison.
