Blood drives

Banner Churchill Community Hospital along with United Blood Services will be hosting a blood drive on Dec. 9 from 10a.m.-5:30 p.m. in the Lake Tahoe room.

High school book fair

The Churchill County High School will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair in the library from Dec. 1-5.

The book fair hours will be from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 2p.m. Friday.

Lyon County Republicans

The Lyon County Republican Central Committee (LCRCC) will hold its next meeting on Dec. 6 at the Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A.

The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend and learn more about grassroots politics and meet with Republican officials.

Churchill Democrats

The Churchill County Democrats will host a Christmas social on Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. instead of their regular monthly meeting. The event will be held at Nyla Howell’s house. For directions, call 775-867-4229.

Lahontan Republican Women

Lahontan (Churchill County) Republican Women will meet Dec. 17 at noon at the Pizza Factory, 2199 West Williams Ave.

Volunteers needed for tax preparation

Churchill County Social Services will be participating in the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program for the 2014 Tax Season.

We are looking for volunteers to assist with income tax preparation. Individuals don’t have to have several years of experience in preparing income taxes but should enjoy working with the public. Training will be provided and volunteers who complete the tax season will be paid a stipend.

Training workshop

A training-of-trainers workshop is designed to educate adults who work with teens and teen peer leaders/educators about healthy dating relationships and the prevention of relationship abuse.

This one-day training will prepare participants to present this information based on educational materials that are appropriate for teen audiences ranging in age 14-17 and young adults 18-24.

Ebola training session

West African countries have been experiencing an outbreak of Ebola that has taken more than 5,000 lives. The disease has also surfaced in the U.S.

A training session with professionals talking on how to survive a possible outbreak here, will be offered free of charge, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Wolf Center, behind Epworth United Methodist Church, 280 E. Stillwater Ave.

Holiday pet adoptions

The Fallon Animal Welfare Group is joining with Best Friends Animal Society for a Holiday Adoption Promotion.

Throughout December, cats six months or older have an adoption fee of $25. Cats under six months are $40 for one; $60 for two. Stillwater Refuge guided tour

Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge hosts a free guided refuge tour on Dec. 6, from 12:30- 3 p.m. Call 775-423-5128 ext 228 by Dec. 4 to reserve one of the limited seats.

Discover the rich human culture of years past, along with meeting the refuge birds of winter such as Tundra Swans, Rough-legged hawks, bluebirds and larks that stop here during their long migration.

MOPS meeting

Are you the Mother of a Preschooler, birth to 5 yrs.? Do you need a break a couple of times a month?

We hope at our meetings moms will find encouragement, support, relevant teaching, and opportunities to develop relationships with other women who are in the same stage of life. Community Service Thrift Shop

The Community Service Thrift Shop at 169 E. Center Street is open 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each weekday.

We are a non-profit organization run by a group of dedicated community volunteers. We do not have room for bicycles, beds, couches or large televisions. We receive donations at the back door from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. weekdays.

Dec. 1-5; Baby clothing 4/$1. Books $2 a bag.

Christmas merchandise is for sale, including the ugly and not so ugly Christmas sweaters, sweatshirts, PJs, etc. We have received lots of material (priced at $1 a yard) and lots of Lace trim’ priced as marked, that is for sale.

The proceeds from our sales support families with emergency help, with a written referral from Churchill County Social Services, and also for the scholarship programs for graduating CCHS students and local nursing students. Call JoAnne Baumgart at 775-423-3719 for information.

The Blue Sky Thrift Store (formerly Fallon Humboldt Shredders) is located at 290 S. Maine St. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Bagged clothing sales, $4 per plastic shopping bag full of clothing available on Saturdays.

Stuf ’n Such Thrift Store

The Stuf ‘n Such Thrift Store, owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., 99 S. Nevada St., 775-423-6446. Donations are accepted Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

American Legion

Library Storytime has relocated to the Churchill County Museum at 1050 S. Maine S., through Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. to accommodate the library Re-purpose project.

Hearts of Gold Quilters

The Hearts of Gold Quilters meets every Thursday 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Fallon Convention Center, 100 Campus Way. All quilters are welcome. We meet weekly to make donation quilts, as well as working on our own projects.

Child support enforcement

Child support enforcement services are available through the Churchill County District Attorney’s office.

The staff may be able to help establish parentage and help obtain a child support order to include medical support. Pick up an application at the Churchill County Child Support Office at 165 N. Ada St., or visit www.churchillcounty.org and follow the links to the District Attorney’s Child Support Division.

Volunteers needed for ChArts Store

The Churchill Arts Council (CAC) is sponsored a training for qualified volunteers to work in the ChArts Store @ the Oats Park Art Center.

Those interested must be at least 18 years of age and attend this training session. While volunteers may be able to see performances when they are working at no charge, they must be completely available to work before, during and after performances. Duties will include assisting patrons with purchases, logistics, and other activities as required.

Amateur radio

The Amateur Radio of Churchill County (ARCC) invites all current amateur (Ham) radio operators or anyone interested in amateur radio to its monthly meeting, which is on the first Tuesday of the month at the Churchill County Administrative Complex, conference room 102, 155 N. Taylor St.

Amateur radio operators are invited to attend a weekly NET on Sundays at 6 p.m. at repeater 146.97 with a PL of 103.5 Hz The purpose of this net is to exchange information relating to general amateur radio topics.

All current amateur (HAM) radio operators or anyone interested in getting their amateur (HAM) radio license come to our bi-monthly Volunteer Examination (Testing) Session, held on the third Saturday (Nov. 15) of every other month. An informal breakfast meeting and social on Nov. 16 begins at 8 a.m. at The Eagles Hall located on the Reno Highway.
