RENO — Federal safety regulators say pilot error was responsible for a midair collision between two jets practicing for the National Championship Air Races in Reno last year.
The National Transportation Safety Board said in a new report released this week that the probable cause of the accident between two Czech-built military training jets was the failure of one pilot failure to see the other plane.
One of the planes was forced to make a belly landing on the runway at Reno Stead Airport on June 13, 2013, but neither pilot was seriously injured.
Twenty-one people have been killed in crashes in the 51-year-history of the Air Races, the most recent in September. In 2011, a pilot and 10 spectators on the ground were killed when a plane crashed near the grandstand.
