It’s that exciting time of year with the holidays upon us and winter weather settling in.

The Nevada Highway Patrol wants everyone to have a wonderful and safe holiday season. Please have a plan before you head out to make proper and sound decisions. If you are gathering with family and friends and plan to drink alcoholic beverages, we want you to have a designated driver or call a cab. Just make other arraignments not to drive after drinking any amount of alcoholic beverage. NHP will have extra patrols looking for impaired drivers. Let’s keep our roadways safe.

Roads will be busy with holiday travelers. Be prepared for winter driving. Keep your speed down. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination safely. Ensure you are well rested before a long road trip. If possible share driving with other drivers that are traveling with you. Take breaks if you need a rest.

The key to winter driving is to slow down and give yourself more distance between other vehicles. Remember bridges and overpasses tend to be icier than other areas.

Most importantly make sure your vehicle is ready for the winter roads. Make sure your tires are in good condition and are properly inflated. Cold weather reduces tire pressure, so make sure you check this on a regular basis. Also have snow chains that are the proper fit and in working order. It is important to know how to properly install them and make sure you are in a safe area when putting them on.

Remember to be patient and courteous when driving and make our highways safe for all of us to travel on.

The Nevada Highway Patrol Fallon/Fernley District with like to say a big “Thank You” to citizens of Fallon and Fernley for all of your donations and support of our “Cram the Cruiser” events in Fallon on Dec. 6 and in Fernley on Dec. 10. We were overwhelmed with all of the donations we received for our senior centers in both areas. The items and monetary donations exceeded our expectations and will most definitely help some wonderful people in our communities.

We also want to thank the citizens of other Northern Nevada communities that did not hesitate to assist and donate to these wonderful centers. Once again it shows how much pride Nevadans have in their own communities as well as being so generous to others.
