Prep Roundup: Carson, Douglas girls basketball teams post victories

Carson High’s girls basketball team made it two straight with a 59-44 crossover win over Hug Friday night at Morse Burley Gym.

Carson improved to 5-3 and 2-2 overall.

Carson rode a 10-point first half by Bri Alvarado to a 24-15 lead after the first two quarters. An 11-3 run to end the third quarter enabled Carson to open up a 41-26 lead, and a 10-1 run midway through the fourth quarter made it a 19-point game, 55-36, before Hug scored eight of the game’s last 12 points.

Maddie Preston led Carson with 14, Alvarado had 10 and Michelle Perry eight.

“The first half was similar to the first half Thursday night,” Carson coach Nate Tolbert said. “It took us about 1 1/2 minutes to get going and then the defense started to pick up in intensity.

“When we settle down and do what we’re supposed to do we’re OK.”

Millett sparks Tigers

MINDEN — Corryne Millett scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter as Douglas took an early lead and then held on to defeat Reed, 52-46, in the Northern Division I crossover game.

Maddy Lowe also scored 14 points while Leonna Mortimer contributed a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the undefeated Tigers.

Douglas (3-0 league, 8-0 overall) led 16-9 after one quarter and extended its advantage to as many as 14 points in the third quarter and 15 points early in the fourth quarter.

Reed (1-2 league, 2-3 overall) rallied to cut the gap to 50-46 after Taylor Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 1:32 to go. Nakiyah LeSure scored on an inside shot with 41 seconds left.

Aneesa Mwakapumba led the Raiders offensively with 13 points, while LeSure added 10.

Douglas visits two-time defending state champion Reno for another cross-over game today at 11:45 a.m.

Sierra Lutheran wins big

SPARKS — Cali Benton scored 13 points and Amy Westre added seven to lead Sierra Lutheran to a 28-15 win over Excel Christian in a Division IV game Friday night.

Sparks tops Dayton

SPARKS — Angela Sikora scored 29 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, but Dayton came out on the short end of a 52-40 decision to the host Railroaders.

“We started pressuring too late and couldn’t get our offense going until the second half,” said Dayton coach Kelly Frantz. “We really outhustled Sparks in the last two quarters and fought hard to get back in the game.”

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL

Reed edges Tigers

MINDEN — Jamel Ramos and Alec Leighton knocked down 3-pointers in the final five seconds to lift Reed to a 49-46 victory against Douglas in the Northern Division I crossover contest.

A 3-pointer by Ramos from the top of the key with 5 seconds left tied the score at 46-all, then after Douglas turned the ball over in its backcourt with 1.0 showing on the clock, Leighton took the inbounds pass on the left wing and hit another 3-pointer to give Reed (2-0 league, 7-3 overall) its win at Randy Green Court.

Douglas (2-1 league, 3-6 overall) led 46-43 after Connor Lyons converted a free throw with 37.3 seconds left and Sam Broersma added another free throw with 10.6 seconds to go.

Lyons finished the night with 17 points, 10 of which came in the third quarter. Michael Johnson also scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Broersma grabbed 13 rebounds and Alex Tessmann 11 rebounds.

Ramos led all scorers with 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Leighton added 17 points with a pair of 3-pointers. Lincoln Turner connected on a 3-pointer that brought the Raiders back to 44-43 with 1:41 left to play.

Douglas plays again today at 1:30 p.m. at Reno High.

Dayton rallies

SPARKS — The Dayton Dust Devils rallied from a 23-9 halftime deficit to Sparks to claim a Division IA league win Friday night.

Coach Jason Santos said Dayton was 5-of-14 from the free throw line in the first half and had numerous turnovers in what he called an “extremely bad first half.” He said the Dust Devils had a hot start to the third quarter to key the rally.

“We hit some 3s early and went to our 2-2-1 press and things started going our way,” Santos said.

Jon Joyner led the team with 14 points, Blake Blocker chipped in eight. Davis Winebarger scored seven and Ty Pearson had six. Dayton (1-0 in league) travels to Winnemucca today for a game against Lowry.

Muckers edge Redding Christian

VIRGINIA CITY — Virginia City bolted to a 22-8 first-quarter advantage and held on for a 61-54 win Friday night in a nonleague contest.

Clint Hess led the way with 25 points followed by Sam McCain with 10 and Colt Hess with 9.

Virginia City plays Sage Ridge tonight at 5:30 at VC.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson boys roll

Michael Mendoza scored 13 points to lead Carson to a 48-31 win over Hug Friday night.

Connor Quilling added seven, while Jesse Lopez and Gurprett Badhan added five apiece.

Carson is now 5-3.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hug nips CHS

REED — Mallory Otto scored 23 points, but it wasn’t enough as Hug won the physical battle, 40-38.

Camiell Simpson added seven, but also suffered an injury.

Carson dropped to 6-2.

Dayton girls lose

SPARKS — The Dayton girls dropped a 1A game to Sparks, 31-16.

Carson freshmen win

RENO — Kyle Glanzmann scored 11 to lead the Senators to a road win.

Blaise Bonomo chipped in 10 to help the Senators improve to 2-6.
