RENO — Carson High wrestlers had a rough day at the 20th annual Tournament of Champions at the Reno Events Center.
Brady O’Keefe (145), Nolan Shine (152) and Brady Rivera (220) all lost two straight matches on the second day of the prestigious tournament and were eliminated. All three entered the day unbeaten entering their quarterfinal matches.
O’Keefe lost 5-0 to Cibola’s Andres Gandara, the No. 1 seed, and then lost 8-1 to No. 6 Anthony Wokasch of Mt. View-Arizona.
Shine lost to No. 1 Wyatt Sheets of Stillwell-Oklahoma, 13-1, and then was pinned by Reed’s Jacob Otuafi in his next match. Shine was in the match until the last period when it got out of hand.
Rivera dropped an 11-5 decision to No. 1 Eric Thrift of Borah, and then he lost 4-3 to Simon Jacunide of Cibola.
“We didn’t have any crazy expectations in those matches against the top seeds,” CHS coach Paul Carter said. “I thought we’d get a win on the back side. We needed one win to place.”
Carson wrestles in the Sierra Nevada Classic Dec. 29-30 at the Livestock Event Center.

Eleven wrestlers place at NV
RENO — Eleven Carson wrestlers placed at the Battle of the Valley Tournament at North Valleys.
Jordan Aikins (160) placed first and went 3-0 with two pins and Kevin Rusler also placed first with a 2-0 record and one pin.
Ethan Lepire (106), Kyle Rudy (120), Jake Roman (126), Seth Reichelt (145), Jesse Case (152), Austin Rudy (160) and Alex Honeycutt (170) all placed second.
Jarod Butler (160) and Terin Keller (113) placed third.

Lowry outlasts Dayton
WINNEMUCCA — Dayton fell to 1-1 in Northern 1A after falling 57-48 Saturday to Lowry.
Carson played the Buckaroos real close in the first half, trailing 27-24. Lowry outscored Dayton 30-24 in the final 16 minutes.
“We hit some shots in the second half,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “We got to the line a lot in the second half. We missed some layups and had some 3s rattle in and out.”
Blake Blocker led Dayton with 15 followed by Davis Winebarger with 12 and Ty Pearson with seven.
Douglas dropped by Reno
RENO — Reno outscored Douglas 34-18 in the second half to grab a 60-50 crossover win on Saturday afternoon.
Douglas is 3-7 overall and 1-1 in league.
Michael Johnson led the Tigers with 17 and Jace Hart added 11.
Virginia City mauls Sage Ridge
VIRGINIA CITY — Clint Hess (15), Tristan Steele (11) and Sam McCain (12) combned for 38 points to lead the Muckers to an easy 74-29 win in a Division IV contest.
Colt Hess added eight and Tommy Redican added seven.
VC is 9-2 overall and 1-0 in league.
Carson hosts Reed Tuesday
Carson looks to extend its winning streak to two when it hosts Reed at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Senators are coming off a 68-39 win on Friday.
Yerington rolls Silver Stage
YERINGTON — Sam Hammond scored 23 points, 21 in the middle two quarters, to lead the Lions to a 79-43 in a Division III basketball game.
Matt Brannan scored 12, while Koby Foster and Cortez Berumen added 11 each.

Lowry pummels Dayton
WINNEMUCCA — The Buckaroos rolled to an easy 52-8 win, dropping the Dust Devils to 0-2 in league play.
Chri Ricci and Angela Sikora had three points apiece and Kristina Mason pulled down five rebounds.
“We have a lot to work on,” coach Kelly Frantz said. “The game revealed our weak points. There are things we know we need to work on, like handling pressure and taking care of the ball or else teams will dominate us like Lowry did today.”

WINNEMUCCA — Lowry rolled to an easy 59-15 win over Dayton. No other information was provided by the Dayton coaching staff.

Dayton tops Sparks
Jacob Massett scored 11 points to lead Dayton to a 45-34 win on Friday in the 1A opener.
The balanced attack saw Brandon Evans with eight points, while Kolby Duncan, Gabriel Dums and Jonathan Gibbons scoring six.
