Popovic concert a near sellout

There are still a few seats available for the performance by the Ana Popovic Band tomorrow night. If you’ve any interesting is seeing this outstanding guitarist and singer, right here in Fallon, you’d better call Churchill Arts right away at 775-423-1440.

Tickets are $17 for CAC members, $20 for nonmembers. She will also be doing a free and open-to-the-public conversation tomorrow afternoon, but due to a change in the artist’s travel schedule the conversation will now be held at 4 p.m., not 3 p.m., and she will also be available to meet the audience after the show.

CAC’s February film series will begin on Feb. 7 and will feature three of Robert Mitchum’s classic thrillers that were originally released between 1947 and 1962.

“Out of the Past” will screen on Feb. 7. The film was released in 1947 and stars Mitchum, Jane Greer, Rhonda Fleming and Kirk Douglas. On Feb. 14, the 1955 film “Night of the Hunter” will be shown. In addition to Mitchum, it stars Shelley Winters, Lilian Gish and Peter Graves. The series will conclude with “Cape Fear” on Feb. 21. This 1962 film features Mitchum along with Gregory Peck, Polly Bergen and Telly Savalas.

The Art Bar will be open from 6 p.m. until the conclusion of the films. Screenings will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets for the films are $7 for CAC members, $10 for nonmembers. Special passes for all three films — $18 for CAC members, $27 for non-members — will be available for purchase on February 7.

We’ll have more information on each of the films in the coming weeks. In addition to the film screenings, the Churchill County Library will have a number of relevant books available.

These include the novels “Night of the Hunter” by Davis Grubb and “Cape Fear” by John D. MacDonald as well as three biographies of Robert Mitchum including “Baby I Don’t Care” by Lee Server, “Mitchum In His Own Words” by Jerry Roberts and “Robert Mitchum: A Biography” by George Eells.

And, “An Evening with the Arts,” CAC’s annual dinner and silent auction fundraiser is coming on March 1. The event, which raises funds to help insure continued delivery of Arts Council programs and activities throughout the year, features a variety of artworks, weekend getaways and other eccentric items donated by local and regional artists and businesses.

Dinner will be catered by the Slanted Porch. Tickets are $70 per person and include dinner, wine, admission to the auction and a copy of the catalog. Seating is limited, so early reservations are advised.
