Manogue pummels mistake-prone CHS

RENO — Carson High scored the first five points of Friday’s game against league-leading Bishop Manogue, but it was downhill after that.

The Miners ended the first half with a 33-9 run over the next 11-plus minutes en route to an easy 64-38 win in a Sierra League contest.

Carson turned the ball over a whopping 32 times, all in the first three quarters, leading to 30 points for the Miners. And, Carson went just 8-for-22 from the free-throw line.

“We didn’t come to play,” Carson coach Nate Tolbert said. “We had no fire, no passion. I was struggling putting anybody in that wanted to play hard. We work on the press break all the time. We were nowhere near the team we were for the Reed game.”

Madison Preston gave Carson a 5-0 lead with a trey and a bucket in the first 3 1/2 minutes of the contest. Carson didn’t score again until 5:54 remained in the half. By that time, the Miners had scored 18 straight points in a five-minute stretch. Manogue ended the half with a 13-6 run and a 33-14 advantage. Hannah Santos had two 3-pointers in the surge at the end of the half.

A 17-5 burst in the third carried Manogue to a 55-19 lead with less than two minutes left in the third period. Trailing by 33 early in the fourth quarter, Carson went on an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 59-37.

Santos led the Miners with 13 and leading scorer Breezi Holt was held to 13. Preston led the Senators with nine and Ivy Pembrook added six.

Carson visits Spanish Springs Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

Douglas 39, Galena 27

RENO — The Douglas High School girls basketball team scored 14 unanswered points during a span bridging the third and fourth quarters Friday to rally for a Sierra League victory.

Douglas (17-6 overall, 6-1 league) trailed 12-5 after one quarter, but only allowed 15 points the rest of the way.

Jessie Jim scored 10 points, eight of which came in the second half, to lead the Tigers offensively. Paige Brown led all scorers with 12 points for Galena (7-10, 4-8).

Spring Creek 56, Dayton 24

DAYTON — Spring Creek had a hot hand in Friday night’s Division 1A game at Dayton. Despite strong Dust Devils defense, Spring Creek was able to knock down contested shots during the contest.

“We played hard and actually controlled the boards the first half which for us is a huge issue,” coach Ben Halverson said. “Spring Creek to be quite honest just shoots the ball fantastically. We were able to give very good contests and they just did an excellent job of making shots over hands.”

Spring Creek’s strong defense made it hard for Dayton to get clean looks during the contest.

Dayton was led by Taylor Ingersoll with seven points. Lettie Lynch and Cheyanne Strong each added six points a piece.

Dayton is 2-13 overall and 2-9 in league. The Dust Devils host Elko at 2 p.m. today.

VARSITY BOYS

Galena 59, Douglas 46

RENO — The Galena High boys basketball team solidified its hold on first-place in the Sierra League race Friday.

Galena (15-6, 10-2) limited Douglas to 22 points through three quarters and went on to post its ninth straight victory. The Grizzlies led 43-22 at the end of three quarters.

Douglas (11-8 overall, 7-5 league) came into the contest tied with Carson for third-place in the league, two games behind Galena.

James Herrick had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Tigers. Zack Lessinger scored 12 points and Alex McClellan 11 to lead the Grizzlies, who connected on 3-pointers.

Spring Creek 55, Dayton 41

DAYTON — Dayton struggled in a home loss against Spring Creek Friday night.

Austin Fletcher led the Dust Devils with 13 points. Ty Pearson scored nine points.

Coach Jason Santos said Spring Creek was more physical especially on the offense glass.

He said the Dust Devils struggled going 8-for-20 from the free throw line.

Dayton hosts Elko at 3:30 p.m. today.

Kallie Strong scored six points in Dayton’s loss on Friday night. Katie Turner had a solid game for the Dust Devils from the point guard spot.

Carson 34, Manogue 24

RENO — Brianna Alvarado scord 12 points and Andrea Maffei added 10 to lead the Senators past the Miners on Friday.

Greg Wallace scored 17 points in Carson’s win Friday night. Jace Keema added 11 points, Kyle Krebs chipped in eight and Cody Azevedo scored seven. Carson improves to 18-2.

Frosh girls

Carson 36, Bishop Manogue 12

Josie Share scored 16 points as Carson cruised Friday night at home. Mallory Otto, Molly Otto and Sophia Ruedy all added four points for the 18-1 Senators. Carson hosts Spanish Springs on Tuesday.

Carson 53, Bishop Manogue 45, OT

Sevon Mandoki had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in Carson’s overtime win on Friday. Michael Mendoza added 11 points and six rebounds.

JC BASEBALL

WNC drops opener 8-5

The No. 14 Western Nevada College baseball team opened its season with an 8-5 loss Friday against South Mountain in Phoenix.

WNC out-hit South Mountain (13-9), but left 10 runners on base.

Spencer Greer took the loss giving up five runs, four earned on five hits in three innings of work. WNC made two errors in the contest.

Rayne Raven led the Wildcats going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Conner Klein, Joey Crunkilton, Alex Fife and Corey Pool all had at least one hit and an RBI.

JC SOFTBALL

Wildcats stop Gulf Coast

HENDERSON — Carlee Beck scattered nine hits, and Cara McCarthy and Jenny Rechel drove in a run apiece to lead the Wildcats to a 5-1 win over No. 14 Gulf Coast Friday afternoon.

WNC plays today at 8 a.m. and again at 1 p.m.

McCarthy, Katelyn Bomar, Rechel, Kaitlyn Covione and Madi Gonzalez had a hit apiece in the victory.

The Wildcats scored four in the first and added a run in the third. Gulf Coast scored its lone run in the first.
