Wildcats blank Pima, 5-0

PHOENIX — For the second straight day, Western Nevada College’s baseball team shut out Pima in a non-league contest.

Dylan Hollister, Max Karnos and Rayne Raven combined for a three-hitter in the Wildcats’ 5-0 triumph Wednesday afternoon.

The win upped WNC’s record to 3-2 overall.

Karnos worked six innings, allowing just three hits and struck out two, Raven worked the final two innings.

WNC scored one in the fourth and fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the eighth.

Connor Harber tripled and drove in two runs.

WNC plays Cochise today at 2 p.m.

WNC swept in SWC opener

ST. GEORGE, Utah — Western Nevada College’s softball team opened its Scenic West Conference season by being swept by 10th-ranked College of Southern Idaho, 16-0 and 15-2, Wednesday afternoon.

The teams collide in another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. today. WNC is 2-5 overall.

“They have a strong team,” WNC coach Leah Wentworth said. “We struggled to put the bat on the ball for the first time this season.”

In the opener, CSI scored 11 times in the first two innings off starter/loser Lindsey Ashbaugh, who walked eight and gave up eight unearned runs in the five-inning contest. CSI hit four homers in the game.

WNC’s only hit in the opener was a double by Megan Hospodka.

In the nightcap, CSI broke open a tight game with six-run outbursts in the fifth and seventh innings.

Madi Gonzalez, Hospodka and Jenny Rechel all had a hit. Rechel had the only RBI.

Carlee Beck took the loss, allowing 18 hits and 11 earned runs.
