The stage driver (continued from Thursday). His punctuality has something supernatural in it. How, in the coldest weather, in the severest storm, in fogs, in sleep, in hail, in lightening, in mud, when nobody else is abroad, the stage-driver appears, rounding the corner just as regular and just as quiet as the old clock in the kitchen.

News of a gallant rescue of a family of six under a snow slide in Woodford’s canyon. The scene of the slide was the old deserted shingle mill about half a mile above Woodford’s Station. After hearing of Friday’s slides a man named Merk went up and found the shingle mill covered in rock and snow (continued Saturday).

100 years ago

Just before noon yesterday Mrs. Sarah Donovan, wife of Edward F. Donovan, passed away in this city of old age. The deceased was a native of Tyrone, Ireland, coming to Maine at the age of seven. She came to Silver City in 1877 and in 1894 moved here.

70 years ago

Raymond Clapper, 51, famed newspaper man and columnist, was killed in an airplane accident in the Marshall Islands, the navy announced. Clapper is the 16th American war correspondent to have died in action. Seventeen are missing and 70 wounded.

A group of 16 Carson City high school youngsters earned straight “A” grade marks for the fall semester.

As one of the last states to value archival history of important state documents, many were lost or damaged. Some have been moved to the new Legislative building. The legislative counsel bureau is looking to clean out shelves of ancient yet significant treasures.
