Prep / JC Roundup: Cochise edges Wildcats in 9th

DOUGLAS, Ariz. — Cochise ended No. 14 Western Nevada College’s three-game winning streak with a 6-5 win Thursday afternoon to open a three-game series.

The teams continue the series today at 1 p.m. WNC is 3-3 overall.

Cochise, ranked 10th, snapped a 5-all tie in the bottom of the ninth on a one-out single by Jake Luna.

WNC scored twice in the top of the seventh on run-scoring single by Alex Fife and a double by Spencer Dorsey to tie the game at 4.

Joey Crunkilton’s homer in the eighth made it 5-4, but Louis Boyd’s single in the bottom of the inning tied the game.

Fife and Dorsey each had two hits for WNC. Sophomore Spencer Greer allowed three hits and fanned five in his five-inning stint.

CSI sweeps WNC again

ST. GEORGE, Utah — For the second straight day, a leaky defense and College of Southern Idaho’s high-powered offense was too much for the Wildcats.

Southern Idaho spotted WNC a 2-0 lead and then scored 15 unanswered runs for a 15-2 win in the opener. In the nightcap which lasted just five innings, CSI rolled to a 17-0 victory.

WNC is 0-4 in Scenic West Conference play, and will travel to Arizona for a two-day tournament starting today.

WNC made six errors in the opener which led to six unearned runs.

Madi Gonzalez had two of WNC’s six hits in the opener, while Katelyn Bomar, Katilyn Covione, Heather Septon and Lindsey Ashbaugh added one each. Cara McCarthy had the team’s only RBI.

In the nightcap, seven errors led to 11 unearned runs off Ashbaugh and Carlee Beck.

Gonzalez, Covione, Makenzie Hospodka and Megan Hospodka all had a hit apiece.

WNC, 2-7 overall, is scheduled to host No. 16 Salt Lake Community College for a four-game series on Feb. 14-15. Doubleheaders are set for 1 p.m. on Friday and noon Saturday at Edmonds Field.

Knoebel takes 4th

Carson High’s Erna Knoebel grabbed a fourth-place in Wednesday’s slalom event at Alpine Meadows.

The next event for the CHS team is at Heavenly on Tuesday.

Alison Greene was 32nd for Carson, which fielded an incomplete team.

Charles Hersey was 24th to lead the CHS boys followed by Luke Kirsch 28th, Conner McRae 29th, Ian VanRensselaer 34th and Hunter Hewitt 38th. Rylan Kane was 17th in the JV boys race.
