Parsons, Rechel continue success

The Nevada softball team continued its impressive start as the Wolf Pack went 4-1 at the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas last weekend.

Nevada beat Portland State (6-2), UTEP (4-0), smashed BYU (20-10) and drilled Hawaii (11-2). The Pack’s lone loss was a 10-6 affair to Chattanooga. The Pack improves to 8-2 on the season and travels to Phoenix for the Grand Canyon Tournament Friday through Sunday.

Former Fallon star Sara Parsons tallied five hits in the four games and scored six runs.

Against Hawaii, Nevada put up a nine-run second inning and freshman pitcher McKenna Isenberg got the Wolf Pack out of a bases-loaded jam in the third as Nevada went on to an 11-2 run-rule win.

The win was Nevada’s sixth in its last seven games as the Wolf Pack is now 8-2 on the year.

Nevada sent 14 batters to the plate in the second and freshman Nikki Orozco delivered the first blow — a three-run home run to give Nevada the lead. Jasmine Jenkins later delivered a two-run double and Caylin Campbell and Parsons each had RBI base hits in the frame as well.

Against BYU, sophomore Amanda Weis put up a record-breaking performance as she went 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs scored, seven RBI, 14 total bases and three home runs in the game.

Weis set school records for home runs (previous: two, by 14 players), RBI (previous: 6, by five players), total bases (previous, 10 by Candice Rainwater in 2006) and she tied the school record with four runs scored in the game.

Weis broke the Mountain West record for total bases and tied the league’s record for home runs in a game.

Nevada set team records for runs scored (20), team total bases (36), RBI (19) and it marked the second-best totals in school history in hits (19) and home runs (5).

“Amanda had one of those special kind of games and it’s really been a strong week overall for her,” Nevada coach Matt Meuchel said. “I’m really proud of our team because after dropping that first game (to Chatanooga) and losing our lead early in the BYU game, it took a lot of character to battle back and get that win.”

On Friday, Junior Megan Dortch struck out 11 and faced just three over the minimum in a two-hitter as Nevada beat UTEP.

In the nightcap, Nevada got a complete-game four-hitter from Karlyn Jones and some big offense from sophomores Amanda Weis and Megan Sweet in beating Portland State 6-2.

Weis belted a pair of two-run home runs against the Vikings, each coming after a walk drawn by Parsons, and Sweet smacked a pair of doubles with two driven in to provide the bulk of the offense for Nevada.

Salt Lake takes 3 of 4 from WNC

The Western Nevada College softball team lost both its games Friday to Salt Lake Community College.

The Wildcats fell 15-4, 7-5 in Friday’s games, lost 14-5 and won 8-7 on Saturday.

Former Fallon standout Jenny Rechel had a pair of doubles, two singles, two runs scored and an RBI.

WNC hosts Colorado Northwestern Community College in a four-game set on Friday and Saturday in Carson City. First pitch on Friday is at 1 p.m. and noon on Saturday.
