NV 150 Commission begins to finalize several events

The Mayor’s NV 150 Commission is beginning to finalize a handful of events that will be held to promote the Silver State’s sesquicentennial later this year.

Rick Gray, executive director of the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority, recently updated the committee on state and local activities approved as official sesquicentennial events. Gray said the state commission recently approved Spring Wings, Octane Fest, Cantaloupe Festival the Country Fair, Rural Rumble, Tractors & Truffles and the World Championship Fast Draw.

Furthermore, he said the state is moving ahead to mint a silver medallion commemorating the sesquicentennial.

Michon Mackedon, co-chairwoman of the Fallon committee, said she is hopeful several local events may be held on Nevada Day as long as they don’t conflict with state activities.

Chris Henning, who has been working with Tim Mitchell to bring hometown athletes to a special June event, said the committee has confirmed the attendance of former Fallon standouts Josh Mauga, a linebacker with the New York Jets; Jade Corkill, a world champion team roper; Aarik Wilson, an Olympian from the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing; professional golfer Scott Smith; Jennifer Hucke, a volleyball player who competed on state and national-winning teams; and Jodi Dolan, a softball payer at Ohio State University.

Henning said Harvey Dahl, an offensive tackle with the St. Louis Rams, may not be able to attend.

“Harvey wants to do it, but he is going through some surgeries,” Henning said.

Originally, Henning said the committee wanted to have a family day at the high school, but Relay for Life had to switch sites high school’s track because of construction at the middle school facility.

The Mayor’s NV 150 Commission also discussed the following items:

Donna Cossette, director of the Churchill County Museum, said she is hopeful a time capsule will be located at the museum. Frank Woodliff III said nothing has been decided.

“We need to get the public involved to get more interest,” Woodliff said of the project.

The grant application for a telescope project at Venturacci Park has been submitted. Gray said the commission will learn if the project will receive a grant to fund its construction.

“I hear things are pretty competitive,” Gray said of the available grant money.

He said the available grant money is about $200,000, and the Fallon commission is requesting $20,000.

“The challenge is there’s not a lot of money but plenty of people asking for it,” he added.

Plans for an all-school reunion in mid-August are beginning to form. Mackedon said the idea of every class having its reunion on the same weekend may take a few years to come to fruition.

Plans are underway for a softball game between the firemen and the sheriff’s office.
